One’s being able to use a physical object without prior learning means that there is an intuitive power that stimulates the user's action and moves the user. Thus, this study focused on color that arouses the greatest interest among the elements of contents, such as line and form, etc.
This study breaks away from existing research that draws one dimensional data on the emotions of colors and carries out an analysis with the values derived from an experiment on the eye reactions of subjects.
The experiment was conducted by eye tracking, and colors with a high value of each color attribute were extracted with a prior analysis of cards of colors in the same category and representative colors of six educational applications. Color attributes refer to relatively higher values of the color (RGB), brightness, chroma, luminance and darkness than other attributes. Color cards that contain each attribute were produced as images, which were set up as an experimental stimulus in this study. Areas Of Interest (AOIs) were set up by the color code, and fixed-type experimental equipment by SMI's Remote Eye tracking Device (RED) was used. The indicators derived from an experiment on the characteristics of color attributes and an eye tracking experiment and the indicators of color attributes revealed through a survey after the experiments were compared and analyzed. In the analysis, characteristics of the order of gaze were found in the reaction of their eyes appearing according to color attributes.
The faster the sequence than that of other attributes; the shorter the entry time; the more the revisits; the greater the value of the average fixation; and the longer the first fixation, the faster the order of gaze becomes. The order of gaze is expressed as slow in the contrary results. This study compares and analyzes a total of seven kinds of indicators with the attributes of colors: color (RGB), brightness, saturation, brilliance and darkness. In the results of an eye tracking experiment and survey, commonly, ‘if the color had a high chroma value’, it was found that they fixed their eyes most quickly in a short time for a long time, and there were many subjects who repeatedly re-gaze it. Along with this, ‘if the value of darkness was high’, the order of their gaze was not fast, but it could play a role in fixing their eyes for a long time. It was found that for color, ‘if the value of blue was high’, the number of time of their repeated gazes was high, and the eyes once fixed stayed for a long time.
The question posed starting this study, “How children without learning can use a digital device?” could be drawn as a realistic one as the subjects were selected. It is a question about “whether a group with a high frequency of use of a digital device can perceive color attributes visibly?” This question may be answered ‘There is an order of gaze according to the value of color attributes, and it affects their action.” They perceive color attributes first with their eyes, and there is a degree of a long perception, which moves their action to the next area of selection just with the colors.
The results of this study suggest that the usability of colors can stand out further in producing digital-based contents, and it is expected that this study will play a significant role in understanding the color perception characteristics which can be perceived instinctively in using colors.
