성서를 소재로 한 뮤지컬의 캐릭터 구축 방법에 관한 연구 : 창작뮤지컬 <여리고의 봄> 사마리아 여인의 사례를 중심으로

The story and image of the Christian Bible have frequently appeared in various fields such as literature, play, music, painting, sculpture and etc. and played an important role in Western art history. In modern times, they have become sources in musicals and movies. Under the circumstances, this thesis planned to conduct advanced researches on development history including materials and subjects seen in religious dramas in Western Europe. In addition, specific approaches are suggested through the exemplary cases of worldwide successful musicals produced with materials based on existing Christian Bible and the cases of establishing characters of <Spring of Jericho>, a domestic creative musical.
Study methods are as followings. First, overall history about medieval religious dramas (a miracle play, a mystery drama, morality play and etc.) that became the basis of proposed plays will be arranged based on various documents. With regard to that, the characteristics of religious styles will be discussed and the contents and structural aspects of modern musicals will be compared.
Second, a musical <Jesus Christ Superstar> will be analyzed as an advanced research and the outlook, ideology and emotion of main characters will be explored through a comparative analysis of works necessary for the performance of musical <Spring of Jericho>.
Third, the exemplary cases of establishing specific characters in terms of the script, music, movement will be presented, focusing on a role of a Samaria woman in musical <Spring of Jericho> and based on performance analysis and methodology of establishing characters that influenced most in modern times.
It is meaningful for artists and practitioners to have direct influences on the life of audience through arts and culture friendly to the public. In this thesis, the correct understanding of plays appeared and the process of establishing characters according to strategies and the choice of means that expresses the play are discussed among previous studies that actors should do before conducting the performance.
As actors show an excellent performance when they understand and embrace their characters beyond a simple knowledge of the characters, such a moment, actors will play a wonderful performance when understanding the tendency of audience and making an effort to understand performing arts.
It is my hope that this thesis will be helpful to future’s actors who conduct various performing arts related to the Bible.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

기독교 성서의 이야기와 이미지들은 문학, 연극, 음악, 회화, 조각 등의 여러 분야에서 빈번히 다루어지며, 서양 예술사에서 중요한 영역을 차지해왔다. 현대에 이르러서는 뮤지컬 및 영화의 소재로서도 많이 다루어지고 있다. 이에 본 연구자는, 연구에 배경 지식이 되는 서구 유럽의 종교극의 소재와 주제를 포함한 발달사에 관하여 선행 연구할 예정이다. 또한 기존의 기독교 성서를 소재로 제작한 뮤지컬 중 세계적으로 대중화에 성공한 뮤지컬 사례에 관한 연구 및 국내 창작뮤지컬 <여리고의 봄>의 캐릭터 구축사례를 통하여 구체적인 접근방법을 제시해보고자 한다.
연구방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 해당 공연의 근간이 되는 서구의 중세 종교극(기적극, 신비극, 도덕극 등등)에 대하여 여러 가지 문헌을 근거로 전반적인 역사를 정리할 것이다. 이것을 기본토대로 종교극 스타일의 특성을 연구하며, 현대의 뮤지컬과 내용 및 구조적 측면을 비교해볼 것이다.
둘째, 선행연구로서 뮤지컬 <Jesus Christ Superstar>의 작품분석과 더불어 뮤지컬 <여리고의 봄> 공연을 위해 필요한 작품의 비교분석을 통하여 주요 캐릭터의 세계관과 사상 그리고 정서에 관하여 연구할 것이다.
셋째, 현대 가장 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 연기분석 및 캐릭터구축방법론에 입각하여, 뮤지컬 <여리고의 봄> 사마리아 여인 역을 중심으로 대본, 곡, 움직임의 관점에서 구체적인 캐릭터 구축 사례를 제시할 것이다.
대중에게 친근한 예술문화를 통하여 관객의 삶에 직접적인 영향력을 끼치는 것은, 예술계 종사자로서 의미 있는 일이다. 본 논문에서는 무대에 오르기 전 배우가 선행(先行)해야 할 연구 중에서도, 출연하는 극에 대한 올바른 파악과 그것을 표현하기 위한 전략과 수단의 선택에 따른 캐릭터 구축 과정에 대하여 다루어 보았다.
배우가 자신이 연기하는 캐릭터를 아는 것에 머무르지 않고, 이해하고 감싸 안을 때 비로소 훌륭한 연기가 나오듯이, 이럴 때일수록 대중의 성향을 함께 이해하면서 공연예술에 대하여 연구할 때에 더 좋은 공연이 완성될 것이다.
본 논문이 앞으로 성서를 소재로 하는 다양한 공연예술을 접하게 될 미래의 배우들에게 조금이나마 보탬이 되기를 바란다.
