2000년대 힙합댄스 그룹'거북이'의 활동 양상 연구

본 연구는 2000년대 한국 대중가요계의 변화를 고찰함과 동시에 힙합 댄스라는 복합장르를 선도한 ‘거북이’의 활동 양상을 고찰하고자 하였다. 연구자는 그룹 ‘거북이’의 멤버로서 본인의 경험과 기억을 토대로 연구를 전개하였다. 그에 따른 근거자료로 신문기사와 인터뷰 자료를 제시하여 진행하였다.
현 대중음악계의 세대 간 격차가 커짐을 느끼고 아이돌 가수와 아이돌이 아닌 가수, 또한 그들을 지지하는 팬들 간의 소통의 의미를 파악하고자 논의, 연구를 시작하였다. 이러한 문제의식으로 힙합댄스 그룹 ‘거북이’의 세대 간 경계를 초월한 팬덤 현상에 주목하였다.
이는 연구자의 가수 활동 16여년(1996년∼2011년)의 시간 동안을 돌아보는 계기가 되어 주었고, 자전적문화기술지의 연구방법론으로 본인의 이야기를 논의하며 정리할 수 있었다. 연구의 목적은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 2000년대 한국 대중가요의 변화양상을 고찰한다. 변화를 알아보기 위해 2000년대 한국 대중가요의 흐름을 집어보고, 시대변화와 흐름에 편승하는 음악 장르별 대중화를 살펴보았다. 시대적 보편성을 띈 대중음악계의 현황을 알아보고 그의 비교대상인 거북이만의 특색을 연구 진행함에 있어 연구자가 가수 활동을 해 온 시기의 시대적 변화를 알아보았다.
둘째, 힙합댄스라는 복합장르를 선도한 ‘거북이’의 활동 양상 고찰이다. ‘거북이’가 모토로 내세웠던 언더그라운드의 성향을 가진 힙합문화가 대중화가 되는 과정을 논한다. 더불어 ‘거북이’ 팀이 더 넓은 팬덤을 갖기까지는 댄스와의 장르 결합이 있었다. 그로 인한 ‘거북이’ 멤버들이 갖게 된 정체성에 대한 고뇌를 담은 신문 인터뷰 기사를 제시하였다.
셋째, 이를 통해서 세대 간 경계를 초월한 팬덤 현상을 보인 ‘거북이’의 한국 대중 가요사에서의 의미를 추출한다. ‘거북이’는 음반 시장을 이끌어나갈 재목으로써의 역할을 한 것이 아니라, 시대 변화에 편승하여 살아남은 과정과 시대 흐름을 따르면서도 남들과는 다른 도약의 길을 걸어왔다는 점에서 ‘거북이’의 활동 영역을 살펴볼 가치가 있다고 판단하였다.
본 연구를 위해 필요한 인터넷 조사로 블로그 댓글 및 관심도를 조사하며 연예인 사례논문을 위주로 선행연구를 검토하였다. 또한 시대별 대중음악 장르의 변화와 마케팅과 유통방식의 변화를 조사하였고, 세대 간 경계를 해체 시킨 그룹 ‘거북이’의 팬덤 양상을 연구하여 현 대중가요계에서 결여되어 있는 대중과의 교감을 감성적 해석으로 진행한 연구이다.

Research On Activity Pattern Of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)’, A Hiphop Dance Group In 2000

This research was conducted for the purpose of considering activity pattern of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' which is a group having led the trend of Korean pop as well as hiphop dance world in 2000. The researcher conducted a research on the basis of his own experiences and memories as a member of the group ‘Turtles(Gobugi)'. Newspaper articles and interviews were also suggested as an evidentiary material.
This research was started after a discussion for comprehending the meaning of communication with fans supporting idol singers and those not, recognizing a generation gap in the current popular music world. Recognizing such issue, the research focused on the fandom of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' which was a phenomenon transcending the boundary between generations. This gave the researcher an opportunity to look back 16 years of his singer life (1996 to 2011) and those memories could be arranged after discussing his stories through a study methodology of autobiographical ethnography. The purpose of the research is as follows.
Firstly, aspects of change in Korean popular music in 2000 were to be considered. To understand the change in such, the flow of Korean popular music in 2000 was comprehended and popularization of each music genre jumping on the flow and change of period was investigated. The current state of popular music world having periodic universality as well as periodic changes in the time when the researcher used to work as a singer, for researching the unique characteristics of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)', the comparison target of such, was inquired.
Secondly, activity pattern of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' having led the mixed genre called hiphop dance was considered. The processes of popularization of hiphop culture having a propensity of underground music, which was the unique symbol of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' were discussed. There was also a process of combination with dance genre for ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' team to have a wider fandom. Therefore, an interview on newspaper revealing troubles on the identity of its members according to such combination was presented.
Thirdly, the significance of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)', having the extensive fandom transcending the generation boundary, in Korean popular music was extracted.
It was considered that it was worth to look into the activity areas of the group ‘Turtles(Gobugi)' as it survived after jumping on periodic changes and gained popularity in a different way from others did, following the flow of the period, not as a simple talent leading the music world.
Advanced researches, mainly dissertations on celebrities, were examined, investigating blog comments and interest rate when conducting an internet survey required for this research. Furthermore, changes in periodic popular music genre, marketing, and distribution were inquired and fandom pattern of ‘Turtles(Gobugi)', the group having blurred the generation boundary, was also studied to interpret the communion with the public, which is hardly found in the current popular music world, sensibly.
