In swiftly changing trends, the visually outstanding colors in the whole design field are fluorescent colors.
The fluorescent colors are commonly called neon colors but are different physically and emotionally from general colors. In recent, the fluorescent colors are used in various design fields, and even though fluorescent materials are not included, specific colors are sometimes used and recognized as fluorescent colors. However, because domestic preceding studies on the emotion of fluorescent colors are still insufficient, research on the subject is required much more.
Accordingly, this study is going to clarify colors recognized as fluorescent colors. Furthermore, this study presumes a specific emotion out of some colors that are recognized as fluorescent colors to be weight and reveal the weight of fluorescent colors. In addition, due to the presumption that the visual weight as well as colors recognized as fluorescent colors are influenced by the characteristics of texture, textile materials that are often used in various design fields were also used for this research. The research procedures are as follows:
First, fluorescent colors were examined as a theoretical study through literature and preceding studies on weight among color emotion were reviewed.
Second, the first empirical study was progressed only with color stimulus and its results were analyzed and the visual weight of colors recognized as fluorescent colors was revealed.
Third, the second empirical study was progressed on the colors recognized as fluorescent colors and weight by using textiles of various textures and its results were analyzed and summarized, and the results were compared with those of the first empirical study.
As a result of examining the colors recognized as fluorescent colors only with color stimulus, the colors of GY series with high lightness and R, RB series with middle lightness and high chroma were recognized as fluorescent colors and when the texture of a textile fabric is included, GY series with high lightness, middle and high chroma and YR series with high lightness and high chroma and R series with high lightness and middle chroma were recognized as fluorescent colors. Colors that are not recognized as fluorescent colors in color stimulus are recognized as fluorescent colors in a textile fabric and the recognition of similar colors as fluorescent colors is different according to texture.
Regarding the weight of colors, lightness influences the most and color has some influence as well. The colors of GY with high lightness and R with middle lightness and high chroma and colors of RB series recognized as fluorescent colors were felt light. In case that texture was included, on the analysis of the visual weight, the numbers and variables of stimulus became increased and dispersion was not equal and as dispersion is bigger, it means different judgment criteria and difficult judgment. In particular, even though lightness in tone was defined as the factor that has the biggest influence on weight, the fact that increased texture shows big differences of dispersion in low and high lightness, high lightness·high chroma of achromatic colors can be considered that texture influences weight more than colors. In texture with high transparency and low lightness or texture that looks opaque and heavy, dispersion was bigger in case of high lightness. In the result of small dispersion, mainly transparency and lightness were closely related to weight but it is different according to color series. In addition, this study found that even though practical weight is light, the visual weight can be felt heavier according to colors and texture.
In texture materials, even colors recognized as fluorescent colors were divided into big and small dispersion of weight according to the transparency of texture. To sum it up, fluorescent colors are recognized light by colors but in case of including texture, it was concluded that the influence of texture on weight is bigger than colors. That is to say, texture has more importance on the visual weight than colors.
This study expects that we can figure out colors that are recognized as fluorescent colors from various colors used by us and use colors that can replace them without a fluorescent material. In addition, it has significance in that it can also satisfy the emotion of fluorescent colors like weight. Specially, it is considered that this study will help select and use materials of appropriate texture as well as plan and design light products using fluorescent colors.
