The meaning of archiving architectural and spatial symbolism and seeking ways to do that: With focus on Myeongdong Cathedral

Regarding architecture and space as an object of archiving, this study addressed its theoretical background and the meaning of architecture and spaces and how to seek ways to archive. Archiving architecture and spaces is archiving evidence and memory. To this effect, how memory, culture and semiotics were connected was theoretically studied and then what memories accumulated through unlimited semiotics in the social and cultural context was addressed with focus on Myeongdong Cathedral.
Myeongdong Cathedral was expressed in a compromising pattern owing to the limit of Chosun architecture and the religious meaning towards God unveiled in Gothic style and contained several meanings such as 'history of Korean catholic', 'holy ground of Korea' democracy' and 'cultural space' as well as 'a meeting between the East and the West'.
Archiving architecture and space is archiving the above foregoing meanings. To archive these meanings, I sought after the considerations required across the phases: 'acquisition', 'arrangement' and 'utilization'. Thus archiving architectures and spaces is meaningful in that it may expand the types of architecture records and induce general users, as well as researchers and stakeholders, to participate
