This study is to look into the relations between parenting behavior and participant roles in peer bullying, normative beliefs during adolescence. It also confirmed whether normative beliefs have any mediated effect in the relations between parenting behavior and participant roles in peer bullying.
We divided parenting behavior into positive parenting behavior and negative parenting behavior, and also grouped participant roles in peer bullying into five sub factors: bully, victim, outsider, defender, bully-followers
The participants for this study were 381 students who are second grade in middle school and 437 students in the second grade of high school in Seoul. The questionnaire consisted of Parenting Behavior Inventory(PBI), the Participant Role Questionnaire, and Normative Beliefs scale to respond.
The results of this study were as follows.
At first, the result of examining the character of participant roles in peer bullying is that 85.70 percent of respondents engaged in peer bullying. The survey shows that 22.37 percent of the participants in peer bullying were defenders that most of participants acted as, 20.05 percent were outsiders, 16.26 percent were bullies, 14.06 percent were bully-followers and 12.96 percent were victims. Also we found the differences of the normative beliefs depending on the participant roles in peer bullying. All participants generally have high normative beliefs except for defenders. Defenders have the lowest normative beliefs, while Bully-followers have the highest normative beliefs.
Secondly, we looked over what the relations between parenting behavior and participant roles in peer bullying and normative beliefs are. The result confirmed that the positive parenting behavior had negative correlations with normative beliefs, outsiders and bully-followers, but positive correlations with defenders. However, negative parenting behavior were positive correlations with normative beliefs, bullies, victims, outsiders and bully-followers. Normative beliefs were positively related to bullies, victims, outsiders and bully-followers, but negatively related to defenders.
Finally, examining the mediated effect of normative beliefs in the relations between the parenting behavior and participant role in peer bullying, the study showed normative beliefs only acted mediator variable with father’s negative parenting behavior.
