The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of social activities influencing satisfaction for life of the aged. The subjects of this study were the aged over 65 participating in various programs in Senior Welfare Centers in Seoul. To achieve the goal of the study, 39 questions regarding economic activities, service activities, religious activities and leisure activities (sub‐areas of social activities of the aged) were tested for reliability and a survey was performed using the questionnaire on the aged who gave informed consents to participated in the study. 120 subjects were interviewed and 101 answers excluding 19 insufficient or insincere cases were used for the final analysis.
According to results, first, marital status, residential type, monthly expense, procurement of expense, level of life, health status and facing problems out of general characteristics of the aged were found to be significantly correlated with satisfaction for life.
Second, sub‐areas of social activities of the aged such as economic activities, service activities, religious activities and leisure activities were found to have significant correlation with satisfaction for life.
Third, satisfaction for religious activities made the biggest influence on satisfaction for life out of 4 sub‐areas of social activities of the aged and next was satisfaction for service activities, and then in the order of satisfaction for economic activities and then satisfaction for leisure activities
Based on the study results, the followings were proposed to give positive effects on satisfaction for life of the aged and to let them have successful senescence.
First, we need to develop diversified practical programs focusing on communities so that the aged can have more opportunities to participate in economic, service, leisure and religious activities and perform and improve them continuously.
Second, area expansion with equal participating opportunities is needed so that the aged can select social activities which is easy, interesting and fulfilling from the perspective of the aged and matches with their aptitudes. Additionally, we need to prepare safety facility and devices to respond to accidents that may arise during social activities.
Third, academically, detailed studies on the factors influencing satisfaction of life of the aged should be made by specifying sub areas of social activities of the aged.
