In this dissertation, I am trying to find a good educational solution about various problems in the present situation of the Church, especially in the youth Catechesis area. Nowadays the digital culture already has a strong influence on all areas of our society. Furthermore, young people are very sensitive and enthusiastic in adopting themselves in the advanced technology. I think the Catholic church should offer an effective teaching method for the youth especially who belongs to the digital native territory. The church has to provide proper education for mankinds who are living or staying in the cyberspace to meet Jesus Christ where they belong to. The Catholic church has to offer and introduce a good way for the Christians of these days - who are living a rapid changing in every circumstances and those terms are faster than ever before. In this thesis, I try to present a new catechistical method of education by using the online game. This methodology based on Preventive System of Don Bosco who is called the Father of Catholic pedagogy for youth. The Church has to use Preventive Systematic method over using online contents positive side for approaching to the new generations who are familar with digital culture.
This thesis comprises as three chapters. In the first chapter, it focuses on the current feature of the online game. The human race has a natural tendency for enjoyment. This kind of tendency produced many plays and games. The online game is one of these entertainments too. Especially, the computer games are still improving more and more in a fast time and have affected many peoples lives up until now. At the same time, the game industries are growing up faster and needless to say It earns huge amount of money. So that, games of non-educational story or topics are increasing, and those games affected people badly without any concerns about moral values and ethic norms. After the advent of smart phones, mobile games also has a massive amount of products, and young christians are staying in a virtual reality with those, instead of going to the church. This is why the Catholic church has to make a solution as soon as possible.
In Chapter 2, I have suggested the need for the development of online games for the catechism. It is often said that what most concern our society has nowadays is education. In this regard Church is no exception. Because it is clear that the future of the Church depends on the youth who are the protagonist of tomorrow. However, according to the statistics of the Church, it seems that the catechism today does not meet effectively the demands of a new generation. In reality Sunday school is decreasing more and more, it is necessary to take note that ideal education of the Church is possible, if we are able to make the most of favorite games the new generation enjoys as a tool of catechism. The teaching of utilizing the internet has already done in various ways, it is a reality, however, that the teaching of taking use of the online games has never done.
In Chapter 3, it is dealt the expected effect and specific development principles of the online games for the catechism. It is necessary the development of the online games for the catechist approached in the principle of the preventive system in order to solve the issue of the catechism and to reduce the dysfunction of the existing game culture. A world view of the online games must affect the fundamental direction of the whole game. I suppose that we can work out a moral foundation to solve the problem of the existing game culture, when we change a fantastic and violent world view of the online games nowadays into the Christian world view. I suggest, further, that when we take use of the Christian Bible as to make scenarios and narratives of the games, we can spontaneously inform the Christian culture and derive educational effect.
It is finally dealt the teaching methods of catechism using the mobile media, keeping in mind that the use of mobile devices and smart phones recently is increasing rapidly. I insist in this study that the development of the online games for the catechist will be the tool for the Catholic education to effectively proclaim the Gospel to the young today. Because the digital culture today that an experience through the virtual reality is extended to the real life can be an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel to the end of the world and to experience the Christ
I close the research, hoping that the young who are contacting the online through the various devices such as the mobile device right now can be more closely connected to the Christ always.
