The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among parents' and teachers' empathy perceived by children, their anger expression pattern, and aggression. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, three questions were raised as follows:
1. Is there any relationship among the parents' empathy, children's anger expression pattern, and aggression?
2. Is there any relationship among the teachers' empathy, children's anger expression pattern, and aggression?
3. Is there any relationships among parents' and teachers' empathy, children's anger expression pattern, and aggression?
The participants in this study were 218 elementary school students in the 5th and the 6th grade in Cheongju city. Four questionnaires were administered to them to measure parents' empathy, teachers' empathy, anger expression pattern, and aggression. Data collected in this study were analyzed by t-tests using SPSS 15.0.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. It was found that the higher level group in parents' empathy scored significantly lower in children's anger-out and aggression than the lower level group.
2. It was found that the higher level group in teachers' empathy scored significantly lower in children's anger-out and aggression than the lower level group.
3. In the case of children who perceived higher their parents' empathy, it was found that there was no relationship between their teachers' empathy and their anger expression pattern, and aggression. However, in the case of children who perceived lower their parents' empathy, it was found that the higher level group in their teachers' empathy scored significantly lower in children's anger-out and aggression than the lower level group.
These findings suggest that the parents' and teachers' empathy are important factors in children's anger regulation and their aggression reduction.
