The purpose of this case study is to highlight the differences between Yakut and Korean traditional weddings by comparing the customs, procedures, and rituals during the ceremony and to discover their inherent symbolic meaning. In the past, both countries strongly relied on a matrilineal tradition, but a wedding itself cannot be defined as the meeting of only a man and a woman, but also as a meeting of two families from different social and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it can be seen that traditional weddings emerged during the reconstruction of the social structure from matriarchy to patriarchy. This presupposes the birth of a new family based on a paternal line. This is revealed by the fact that marriage developed focusing on arranged marriage and early marriage and also by the continuation of polygamous customs and the custom of marriage by capture.
Furthermore, it is more important to compare wedding procedures and rituals. Focusing on space, weddings can be classified into wedding ceremonies held in the bride's house and wedding ceremonies held in the groom's house. Focusing on time, the first step is to discuss the marriage and the last step involves a visit to the bride's house. At the intersection of time and space, the wedding may be seen as a transition step, as a ‘passage to another world’. During this stage, the dowry and the gifts for the bride's family, which are paid by the groom to the bride’s family are essential for the passage to another world. However, according to Korean tradition, the dowry and the gifts for the bride's family have a symbolic meaning, and in the Yakut tradition, these things are necessary for life. Therefore, in contrast to Korea, in Yakut tradition, the dowry and gifts for the bride's family are subdivided very concretely.
The wedding as a rite of passage of a person from one social state to another can be explained by the bride's and groom's process of death and rebirth, or process of ‘passage to another world’. From the standpoint of the bride, ‘passage to another world’ is a process of death and rebirth, and it resembles the structure of a creation myth. The bride experiences death through being isolated in an enclosed space and with her face covered. By meeting the groom, she is free from this condition and experiences rebirth. However, in order to save the bride, the groom has to face trials and tribulations. Therefore, from the standpoint of the groom, the ‘passage to another world’ is a journey to another world in order to rescue the bride, and it resembles the structure of a heroic myth. There is a difference in the perception of 'another world' in Korea and Yakutia, which is revealed in the different behaviors shown towards the groom in the bride's house or the attitude towards the bride in the groom's house during Korean and Yakut weddings.
Because there is a lack of research on traditional Yakut weddings in Korea, this study aims to expand the knowledge of the rites of passage. Furthermore, this study may make a meaningful contribution to the discussion over an already existing hypothesis, which points out that the origin of Korean culture starts from the northern part of Siberia. Therefore, it is expected that this comparative study can contribute to the confirmation of the distinctiveness and universal value of human civilization demanded by a multicultural society.
