The purpose of this study is to explore the life satisfaction among the elderly of Mongolia and to examine the comprehensive influencing factors such as socio-demographic, health-related, self-esteem and social network factors on their life satisfaction.
According to the findings of the study, the elderly of Mongolia have relatively middle level of life satisfaction. And the findings revealed that health status, marital status, self-esteem and income were significant predictors of life satisfaction of the elderly. In addition, health status is more significantly important factor than other factors such as marital status, self-esteem and income.
The result shows that the married elderly have a higher level of life satisfaction than the single elderly, the elderly with higher income have a higher level of life satisfaction than the elderly with low income, the elderly of better health have higher level of life satisfaction than the elderly of worse health, and the elderly who have a higher level of self-esteem have level of life satisfaction. These predictors need to be considered in the care of these people to preserve or improve their life satisfaction.
Policy and practical implications are suggested as following. The government should intervene to improve the quality of public health service, especially public health center. Also social policy should be introduced to support the employment of the elderly and to increase their income. The social services should be put on health service programs for the elderly. Contents of such programs should include developing in-home health services to the elderly, developing rehabilitation services, increasing the knowledge of nursing care in the family, and prevention of old age-related aggravation.
