In the information society, the meaning of record management is changing. This study defined how to recognize information which is being important in the record management environment, with the advent of information society. For this purpose, this study examined record management's role as information management and archivist's role to carry it out directly, by introducing information continuum model that mentions the significance and value of information management to help in understanding information management.
Information continuum reflects a concern of how to consider, understand and manage information. This study explained what roles the attributes related to information are playing in information management that is within the infinitely expanded dimension, exceeding the limit of space and time.
Information continuum explains a frame to create information through the 'Structure/Action' attribute. Structuration theory shows the fact that information is created through structure and action, and gets some meaning. This information is saved and remembered and establishes its identity in the process in which a personal memory expands to a collective memory from a common memory. This is demonstrated by the 'Storage/Memory' attribute.
This study also defined 'Technology' and 'Metadata' attributes that handle information for managing it effectively. These four attributes are highly significant, since not only do they simply show how information is created and changes, but suggest plans to manage it well.
Moreover, information continuum is introducing a dimensional concept to expand it infinitely from production to pluralisation. With the expansion of dimension, information is 'created' and 'captured' to be used. 'Organising' makes it possible to fulfill 'the most appropriate way' that an organization or a group requires, and 'Pluralising' makes it possible to use information socially beyond an organization.
This understanding of information continuum helps archivists comprehend that information is created in the social structure for record management as information management. It also demonstrates that information makes a contribution to culture, by being captured and remembered as a record and establishing an identity. In addition, archivists need to master practical ways of managing information such as technology and metadata to manage information in an effective way.
In conclusion, archivists should manage information included in a record well and systematize it through a proper cognition of information to perform important roles in expanding it to knowledge and culture.
