This thesis is a study about how to integrate the teaching of essay production into the conventional teaching of essay comprehension(focused on receptive appreciation). There have been many studies on how to effectively guide students to improve their receptive skills in the area of essay pedagogy, but there were little research on the unified teaching of receptive and productive skills. For this reason, I intended to devise a new essay teaching-learning model with practicability that allows teachers to apply it to their teaching methods at school. I have arduously worked on the practicability and accessibility of the model at the actual teaching field so that it can be properly applied to the teaching-learning activities of the school textbooks which are newly developed according to the 2009 Modified Educational Curriculum and have been being used at schools from the year of 2012.
The main points of each chapter is as follows. In ChapterⅡ, Review on Preceding Studies, I reexamined the previous essay teaching models in terms of 3 view points. First of all, the main focus of the preceding studies on essay teaching was primarily placed on receptive activities and the main body for leading class was also a teacher, not learners. The activities and ideas were also confined within the texts because the main focus of the activities was only to help students comprehend the text and internalize its lesson. Secondly, although some old teaching models of essay writing presented various methods with an emphasis on the need of teaching essay writing, many cases displayed limitations in that they were too restricted by formalities and procedures and failed to address the connection between the works of appreciation and the writing. This time, thus, the intention of internalization fell down to doubtfulness. Lastly, there have been a couple of preceding studies which tried to integrate the teachings of essay comprehension and essay production, which were notably different from the two mentioned above in that they stressed the need for integrating the teachings of essay comprehension and essay production. Still, however, the balance was clearly slanted toward the teaching of essay comprehension. Also, the teaching of essay production based upon the works of appreciation was not vividly accentuated.
I searched the formats of all the literature textbooks newly produced according to the 2009 Modified Educational Curriculum and found that 3 out of 13 textbooks have separately a chapter for teaching essay comprehension and one for teaching essay writing, while the other 10 textbooks have the teaching of essay comprehension and essay production in one chapter. As I do see the latter more desirable, I delved deeper and worked closely on the activities of the 10 textbooks in chapter Ⅲ.
The fist format I noted is composed of "receptive activities - report writing activities on the work of appreciation - essay production". Although this format stresses the necessity for creative activities, it has its imitations in that it guides learners to write essay independently of the work they appreciate. The second format, composed of receptive activities and creative activities, also fails to effectively connect those activities because the creative activities present a different subject from the work of appreciation. The last format was intended to induce a learner to experience receptive activities and then reflect on their life though the activities. By providing these activities, it helps learners achieve deeper internalization and look back at their lives. I considered the last format to be most desirable and intended to created a teaching-learning model that can best support and organize these activities.
In chapter Ⅳ, while reviewing a few conventional models, such as Ku In-Hwan and the rest, a classic teaching-learning model, I pointed out that those old ones were so restrained by the fixed frames and strict formalities that they failed to boost the distinctive feature of essays. I also attempted to revive the original feature of essays by presenting the desirable essay teaching and learning model. The procedures of the model is composed of 'preparations - appreciation - creation - pass-along reading - presentation'.
In chapter Ⅴ, I produced a lesson plan based on the model mentioned right above, applied it to school class, and acquired reaction and feedback from the learners.
Lastly, in chapter Ⅵ, I emphatically asserted that the status of essay literature in modern society unprecedentedly gets higher while stressing the necessity of further research on essay education and its methods.
