This study examined the way the sentiment of 'Han' acted on embodying theme in Lee Chung-Joon's novels. In addition, this considered the relative importance of 'Han' and sentimental aspect that is mainly based among various subjects of Lee Chung-Joon's novels. By analyzing the method of unfolding 'Han' in Lee's novels, it is thought to be helpful to understand the method of embodying theme.
Lee's works can be divided into two sections of theme study and form study, considering his work theory. Firstly, there are overwhelmingly many studies on interpreting theme rather than on analyzing form in Lee's novels. The studies on 'human existence problem', 'the representation of general desire', 'homesickness for paradise regained' are various and comprehensive.
Although many scholars have studied 'Han(Resentment)' in Lee's novels. it is true that 'Han' has not been interpreted in terms of various viewpoints. This is based on the respect that the sentiment of 'Han' in Lee's novels is regarded as unfinished aesthetics rather than the fictitious completion of affirmation and reconciliation.
On the other hand, in spite of many studies and theses, the study on 'Han' in sentimental tendency which is centered on the theme in Lee's novels is simply focusing on interpreting theme. The sentiment of 'Han' is restricted to characteristic elements, which is unsatisfactory in terms of the study of sentimental essence that embodies entire theme.
Accordingly, the study on the sentiment of 'Han' may lead to interpreting theme in Lee's novels. Therefore, this study adopts analytic method. Specifically, each subject in Lee's novels is viewed as a phenomenon, and the sentimental base which is connected with it is analyzed as physical, mental and general object. In this study, the symbol of imbodying theme in Lee's novels must be obvious. This study defines <Maejabi>='Falon hunter', <Ieodo>='The islet of Parang', <Namdosaram> a series of novels=‘Pansori' as these symbols.
On the basis of nature of this 'Han', the basic intention of 'Han' embodying theme in Lee's novels consisted in mutual spatiality, reciprocality and direction among symbols.
On that score, firstly, the relationship among mother, father of a folk musician, and sister is centralized on 'Sori‘(sound) in Namdosaram, and the sentiment of each character's 'Han' is variously represented by a man. Namdosaram portrays the repressive circumstances of art as the theme of 'existence', 'desire' and 'homesickness' through sound, and the basic sentiment of 'Han' reveals the distinctive aspect of spatiality, reciprocality and direction in each novel. That aspect leads to negative sentiment from 'loss' to 'regret' to 'resentment' to 'abandonment', and results in affirmative sentiment from 'abandonment' to 'overcoming' to 'sublimation' to 'transcendence'.
Secondly. the discouragement from stoppage of falcon hunting in Maejabi intends to unfold not only the theme of 'human existence', 'desire for traditional culture' and 'homesickness', but also 'overcoming' and 'transcendence' of negative 'Han' through the ecological restoration human and nature. This originates from the reciprocity of human and nature, which aims to restore the cultural ecology beyond the mutual relationship of human and nature.
Thirdly, Cheon Nam Seok who searches for Parangdo(Parang-Islet), leaving reality of pain and despair in Ieodo, is caught in the negative sentiment of 'Han', as the sentimental theme of the writer and reader to restore paradise faces death. Ieodo combines the mythological text of homesickness to restore paradise with Cheon Nam Seok's real stories. Especially, The basic sentiment of 'Han' which embodies theme in Ieodo is rebuilt into descriptive form, which reveals the negative sentiment of Korean 'Han' that results in from 'loss' to 'reproach' to 'resentment' to 'abandonment'.
In conclusion, the sentimental quality of embodying theme in Lee's novels consists in the clearness of 'life' and 'death'. The affirmation and negation is also found in 'spatiality', 'reciprocality' and 'direction' that is based on the theme of 'existence', 'desire' and 'homesickness'. Accordingly, the writer emphasizes not only the gradual reflection of 'Han' all his life but also the sentimental process of 'Han' from 'abandonment' to 'overcoming' to 'sublimation' to 'transcendence' that is essential to embodying theme. The theme in Lee's novels is really materialized and reproduced through this process, where we overcome the sentiment of 'Han' virtually. Therefore, Namdosaram. Maejabi and Parangdo is interpreted as the symbol of embodying theme that leads to brightness and affirmation.
This study searches that 'Han' in Lee's novels is effectively harmonized with theme to some extent, and helps to embody theme. We will be able to find out the important way to approach to Lee's novels in this way.
