The imperialism ideology of the United Kingdom was enjoying its glory days in the mid-nineteenth century of the Victorian era when Emily Bronte‘s Wuthering Heights was written so that the author exposed unconscientiously in this novel the imperialism and white supremacy which were dominating at that period. Wutering Heights looks like a passionate romance between Heathcliff and Catherine but, if this novel is analyzed in dept, this story is no more a simple romance. It is a proof of the author's participation in the ideology of imperialism after all that such colonial discourse of imperialism was unconsciously exposed and expressed metaphorically.
Hence, this paper investigated this literary work through a racial discourse that the background of this novel goes beyond the role of providing realism to the characters and the inherent ideology of white supremacy is exposed through unconscious thoughts and behavior patterns of the characters.
In Chapter 1, this paper shows how the white characters, who are on the side of the strong as colonial rulers and have their racial prejudice, treat Heathcliff, who is a colonist and other race, with inhumanity and 'othernization' through a dichotomous logic that is a means to justify the white's imperialism and how they infuse him with racial supremacy in order to let him admire the whites.
In Chapter 2, this paper investigated the author's position which exposes a racial discourse for the risk of mixed-blood that can menaces the white supremacy. Racial difference was used in the logic to justify the white's ruling over the non-white but it shows through the white characters - Catherine, Hareton and Isabella- the unconscious fear that contacting with a bavarian like Heathcliff could neutralize the civilized world and even make a civilian be degraded to a bavarian. Furthermore, it can be found that the author considers the combination with other races as dangerous and negative by describing Linton, the second generation of Heathcliff and Isabella and the result of a combination between a white and a colored race, as a physically and mentally sickly person and even eliminating her at the end.
In Chapter 3, this paper investigated the author's negative attitude that, when Heathcliff who has been heavily mistreated becomes a colonialist in turn and tries to make a revenge with more cruel behavior, she describes such behavior not as a level of resistance of a colonist but only as a simple imitation of the inhumane aspect of the white.
The logic of imperialism contained in Emily Bronte's unconsciousness is naturally quoted in a racial discourse on Heathcliff, through which the weak spot of imperialism can be peeped. Because of the inherent political purpose of imperialism, they have to oppress other races for their necessary ideology. Such oppression is revealed by finding out the words of ideologyyyydden between the lines of the text. In this respect, it is deemed that the author explains well in Wutering Heights the reality of the U.K. in 19th century and indirectly admits and supports the legitimacy of colonial rule through this novel.
