The development process of our modern history after the independence can be intensively explained as "an ideological split of the left and the right", because both the United States and the Soviet Union began divide and rule policy with the 38th parallel line as the boundary, even before the tears of inspiration that came from the independence after the second World War dried up. During that process, opportunists who wanted to accommodate themselves to trends like pro-Japanese forces were bound to emerge. This was a general phenomenon that was displayed regardless of the left and the right, and innocent citizens were the scapegoats of such opportunistic behaviors.
The concept of 'humanity' is a concept that exists only for 'human beings'. Out of all biological living beings on Earth, humans beings are the only living beings that think at a high level, realize universal truth of 'the right and wrong' and practice 'rightness'. However, the process of carnage and chaos among human beings armed with such intellectual maturity makes one question if human beings are truly superior beings, since humans beings are the only living beings who slaughter their own race in organized and systematic ways. They are displaying unscrupulous behaviors that are worse than animals. Also, we still have scars from such pain in a not so distant past.
Then, what are some resolutions for such historical issues? There are many solutions, but the spread of 'critical consciousness' towards distorted history is the most important. If such consciousness is firmly established, distorted history will never repeat itself again. Above all, history education that makes such consciousness settle down in the minds of growing young students must be strengthened. Also, the spread of social debates in general public must occur as well. For that reason, the roles of governments and media will prove to be important.
If the most important purpose of learning history is 'resolving current issues' and realizing that 'life as a human being' holds the most important value, one must heal the scars from the unfortunate past in order to resolve current issues and to expect better life and future. With such a critical mind in place, I would like to command a view of the developmental stage and impact of "Yeosu․Suncheon incident of October 19th" that began with the revolt of 14th regiment on October 19th of 1948, in Yeosu.
A society that cannot call wrongful crimes of the past criminal is a society that connotes the possibility of the same crime repeating itself all over again. In the beginning stages of the establishment of the Republic of Korea government, it was not possible to call clear crimes such as civilian massacres criminal since it was buried in the anti-communist ideology. Therefore, such crimes repeated themselves over and over from time to time for decades. This is our painful, refracted modern history. Such pain must not repeat itself. There is also something to think about, and that is, is our society as of 2011 a society that can confidently say that the anti-communist ideology formed after '"Yeosu․Suncheon incident of October 19th" and subsequent civilian massacres criminal?
