In Modern Society, Media has been developed focusing on the media associated with human senses especially with sight. The visual media, such as printed material media and wide media, enabled the emergence of new media fused with the media that stimulates human senses. Among them, since the early 20th century the design sector has been rapidly expanding its range from a simple visual design to synaesthetic field. For instance, academically, it is evolved to a seamless communication design academic combined with history, engineering, medicine and many other areas. Along with the advancement of science and technology, the effective value of design has been growing. Virtual Reality, Argment Rality and others are good examples. Likewise, the development of synaesthetic media technology and infrastructure in the current media environment is expanding the range of expression in design.
The IPad by Apple would be the most dramatic change of the media environment in 2010. Although it is difficult to define the characteristics of the media by the previously existing standards, it has a network device that can be multifunctional in various environments in hybrid. Thus, it continues to appeal to consumers greatly in modern society. In addition to IPad, The implementation of the program named App has attracted more and more consumers in that it has a compact and small capacity, enables all the programming which previously existing computers offered, and makes it possible to work and enjoy hobbies, which used to be only possible at home and the company, beyond the limit of space and time. Companies and government have made App applications addressing the demands of these consumers to boost market economy. This study about E-magazine is also connected to this.
E-book and E-magazine in its embryonic stage hasn't been so developed that the design and contents could only transform print magazines into screen and show it once. Though Device Technology has sufficient potential to stimulate human senses, It has not reached the expectations of consumers due to the lack of software capability. In the long term, such a negative user experience can lead to decrease of brand image, trust and satisfaction of existing magazines. Thus, the establishment of design guide has become indispensable. Of course, the organization's lack of preparation and budget caused by the development of software, lack of peoples' design-focused awareness are a big problem, but It is considered to be solved if approached from a design perspective without a large control tower.
The purpose of this study is to examine difficulties of existing E-magazines and suggest improvements through the comparative analysis of <GQ e-magazine> published in Korea, <Wired e-magazine> published in U.S.A and <Monthly Design e-magazine> published by Design House Co., Ltd.
To achieve this, based on the six different types of design elements such as text, layout, images, colors, GUI, sound and etc., e-magazines are analyzed. Based on the result of the comparative analysis, this study is intended to synthesize each problem of current e-magazines. Also, it suggests a proposal for improvements of the design process in e-magazine publishing process through identifying the design improvements that should be made for e-magazine.
