이윤택 희곡 <문제적 인간 연산> 연구 : 연극 기호학적 방법을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제목에서 암시하듯이 <문제적 인간 연산>은 인물 중심의 이야기이다. <문제적 인간 연산>은 역사적 인물 ‘연산군’을 낯설게 극화한 것으로 권력의 이해 다툼이 심했던 당대의 사회 분위기와 사건들을 수용하여 왕으로써의 연산과 그의 인간적 고뇌를 중심으로 다룬 텍스트이다. 이야기의 내용 뿐만 아니라, 무대 위의 공간과 인물, 오브제와 시청각적 자료들은 관객에게 기호로 인식되어 총체적인 의미를 생산하는데 기여한다. <문제적 인간 연산>은 관객이 연산의 비극적 세계 인식에 동참하고 일상에 대한 성찰의 시선을 갖도록 배려한 작가의 기법이 돋보이는 텍스트이다. 그러므로 작품뿐 아니라 연출과 관객을 고려하여 기호의 연관성을 분석하고 이것이 의미하는 바를 이해하는 것이 중요한 작업이 된다.
<문제적 인간 연산>은 그동안 이윤택의 개작, 창작, 재창작 작품들은 작품 자체에 대한 논의보다는 논란에 대한 연구가 주를 이루고 평가를 받아왔다. 이것은 기존의 시선에서 보았을 때 작가가 여러 가지 특이한 양상의 모순을 드러내며 작품 구현을 해 내고 있다는 반증이기도 하다. 기존 논의자들의 연구에서 전통과 제의적 측면, 비사실적 측면, 여성성에 관한 연구, 구조적 연구, 기호학적 연구 등으로 다양하게 분석하였다. 연구의 다양한 논의에도 불구하고 희곡 텍스트의 비언어적 기호가 창출하는 연극성이 부각되어야 한다는 것을 간과한다면 선행 연구에서도 간략하게나마 논의된 연극의 기법적 측면에 있어 우세한 이윤택 희곡 연구는 맥락이 흐려질 수 있을 것이다.
연극기호학은 텍스트를 중심으로 분석하되 무대와 관객을 고려하여 기호학적 관계망을 살펴보는 작업이다. 기호학의 연구 단위는 텍스트, 등장인물, 담화, 공간, 시간, 오브제 등으로 분류될 수 있다. 본문에서는 연극적 발화와 행위, 공간 구성과 플롯의 구조, 비극적 결말 구조의 크게 세 항목으로 나누어 다음과 같은 결과를 산출하였다.
첫째, 갈등 구조에서 변별되는 인물들의 특성을 살펴보고 그 가운데 연산이 어떤 기능의 집적자인가를 추론하였다. 연산은 정보의 집적자이고, 계열체들의 기능 축으로 작용하며, 주제를 드러내기 위한 기법적 장치(인제수의 의미완성)로 기능한다. 둘째, 무대 공간에서 현동화된‘굿’공간은 조화롭고, 인제수(人祭需)의 의미를 산출하는 경계 공간이다. 셋째, 납량극적 무대 배경에서 지시된 오브제들은 감각을 통한 성찰이라는 의미를 생산한다. 즉, <문제적 인간 연산>은 인물 기호를 중심으로 공간과 오브제가 긴밀한 관련성을 지니고 비극적 결말 구조를 이루며‘자기 희생’에 의한 구원의 의미를 생산함을 밝히고자 한다.
이 논문은 <문제적 인간 연산>(1995)의 구조적 특징을 논하고 이것이 어떤 의미 체계를 지니는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기호학의 방법으로 분석된 세 가지 추론 사실을 통하여 <문제적 인간 연산>의 감상의 폭을 넓히는 가능성이 제시될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As title suggests, <Problematic Man Yeonsan> is character centered story. <Problematic Man Yeonsan> dramatized a historical figure 'King Yeonsan’unfamiliarly and deals with Yeonsan's agony under the background of social atmosphere of the time. Space on the stage, objet, characters and audio visual materials as well as story contribute to producing overall meaning. <Problematic Man Yeonsan> is text which leads the audience to participate in Yeonsan's tragic recognition of the world and reflect on everyday life. Therefore, it became important to analyze the relationship of signs considering the relationship between work, direction and the audience and understand the relationships.
Previous studies of <Problematic Man Yeonsan> mainly focused on research on controversy rather than discussion on the work itself, which suggests that author created the work revealing several contradictions with unique aspects. Previous studies of <Problematic Man Yeonsan> are as follows: study with approach through tradition and ritual aspect, study with approach through non-realistic aspect, study of feminity, structural study, and semiological study. If study overlooks the characteristics that nonverbal signs of dramatical text creates, study of plays created by Lee Yun-taek who has outstanding technique may be unsatisfactory and inappropriate.
Theatrical semiotics refers to examining semiotic relational network considering stage and audience while analyzing the work centering on text. Research unit of semiotics can be classified as text, characters, discourse, space, time and objet. This study examined the work <Problematic Man Yeonsan> by classifying it into dramatic presentation and behavior, spacial configuration and the structure of plot and tragic ending structure and the result of analysis is as follows.
First, this study examined the characteristics of characters who were distinguished in conflict structure and inferred what function Yeonsan had as aggregator. Yeonsan is aggregator of information and plays as functional axis of paradigmatic selection and functions as technical device to present theme. Second, 'exorcism' space that was actualized on stage refers to harmonious space and the space that produces the meaning of feast of the self-sacrifice. Third, objets that were indicated on horror stage background produced the meaning of reflection through sense and growth of historical consciousness. In other words, I intend to clarify that in <Problematic Man Yeonsan>, space and object have close relations centering on character sign and this work has tragic ending structure and produces the meaning of salvation through 'self-sacrifice'.
This study aims to discuss structural characteristics of <Problematic Man Yeonsan>(1995) and find out what semantic system this has. Through three inferences that were analyzed with semantic approach, the possibility of widening appreciation of <Problematic Man Yeonsan> can be made.
