한국형 소통 스타일 차원에 대한 탐색적 연구 : 대학생 집단을 중심으로 = An exploratory study of sub-dimensions of Korean communication style

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 한국형 소통 스타일의 개념을 정의하고 이를 반영한 하부 차원을 제시한 후, 이 같은 차원의 타당성을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 이론적 고찰을 통하여 한국형 소통 스타일을 구성하는 하부 차원으로 자아낮춤 격식성, 타자높임 격식성, 경청적 대인간 조화 및 갈등회피적 대인간 조화를 제시하고 이를 측정하는 20문항을 개발하였다.
첫 번째 연구문제는 한국형 소통 스타일이 구성타당도를 가지는가 하는 것이었다. 탐색적 인자 분석을 실시한 결과 자아체면낮춤 격식성, 경청적 대인간 조화, 갈등회피적 대인간 조화와 같은 세 개 인자가 떠올랐으며 인자 구성 요건을 만족하지 않는 일곱 개의 문항을 제거하여 최종적으로 열 세 개의 문항을 한국형 소통 스타일 하부 차원 측정 문항으로 선정하였다.
이후 각 차원(즉 자아체면 낮춤 격식성, 경청적 대인간 조화 및 갈등회피적 대인간 조화)의 타당성을 검증하기 위하여 총 여섯 개의 연구가설을 제시하였다. 각 차원과 관련이 있을 것으로 예상되는 체면민감성, 체면지향행동, 논쟁성향, 자기침묵, 인지욕구와의 관계를 제 2차 부분상관관계 분석을 통하여 살펴봄으로써 동반타당도와 차별타당도를 검증하였다.
연구 결과, 자아체면낮춤 격식성 차원은 체면민감성 및 체면지향행동과 정적인 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 경청적 대인간 조화 차원은 자기침묵 및 논쟁성향과 모두 정적 상관관계가 있었다. 마지막으로 갈등회피적 대인간 조화 차원은 자기침묵과는 정적 상관관계를, 논쟁성향과는 부적 상관관계를 보여 각 차원의 동반타당도가 검증되었다. 마지막으로 세 가지 차원 모두 인지욕구와 유의한 상관관계를 보이지 않아 차별타당도 역시 검증되었다. 이러한 결과는 본 연구에서 제시한 세 가지 차원이 한국형 소통 스타일을 구성하는 하부 차원으로 타당하다는 것을 보여준다.
요약하면, 본 연구는 한국의 문화적 특성을 반영한 소통 스타일 하부 차원을 제시함으로써 개인주의적 저맥락적 문화권인 미국에서 개발된 소통 스타일을 그대로 번역하여 국내 연구에 사용할 때 발생할 수 있는 문화적 타당성 문제를 극복하고자 했다는 점에 의의가 있다. 이는 나아가 한국의 의사소통 문화를 경험적으로 규명하고자 하는 한국적 소통의 이론화 작업에 보탬이 될 것이다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 몇 가지 한계점을 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this study was to explore dimensions of Korean communication style. I identifies two major factors, formality and interpersonal harmony by examining literature. Each dimension has two sub-dimensions. The first dimension has lowering self-face and heightening other-face of formality. The second dimension has avoiding-conflict and listening of interpersonal harmony. Then, I validated these dimensions of Korean communication style by examining the relations with other criterion variables. I proposed one research question and six hypotheses to examine construct, concurrent, and discriminant validity. First, I created a total of 20 statements for the four dimensions of Korean communication style. After conducting an exploratory factor analysis, I found only three dimensions. They were lowering self-face formality, interpersonal harmony of avoiding-conflict, and interpersonal harmony of listening. Then, I examined the relations of these dimensions with other criterion variables. They were face sensitivity, face-oriented action, argumentativeness, self-silence and need for cognition.
Results showed that lowering self-face had a positive correlation with both face sensitivity and face-oriented action. Also, interpersonal harmony of listening had a positive correlation with both self-silence and argumentativeness. Interpersonal harmony of avoiding-conflict had a positive correlation with self-silence and negative correlation with argumentativeness. The need for cognition hadn't any significant correlation with all three dimensions. These results showed that these dimensions of Korean communication style have substantial validity although these dimensions had low explanatory power in a total variance of the factor analysis.
In sum, I sought to overcome the cultural limitations of some of the original communication style scales which were developed in U. S. A. by developing and validating unique dimensions of Korean communication style reflecting Korean cultural characteristics. Finally, I discussed some limitations of this study and suggested future directions.
