In 21 centuries, the globalizing is getting faster. In this fast changing world, insecurity and uncertainty of the times make people want to come back to the primitive life with peace and liberty, based on the natural stream and mental fatalism, so that the Ethnic Fashion becomes to take the lead in the fashion industry. This tendency also makes epidemic influence on the new reorganization of eco-problem, the texture and style inspired from the nature, and Ecology of mood by emerging of the Ethnic fashion. The Ethnic fashion has a lot of things to do with social and economic phenomenon, causing the necessity of multidimensional research.
However, the preliminary research has been limited to specific areas, such as make-up, textile, aesthetic, not covering the current tendency.
This research is to examine the Ethnic style, the important trend today. To achieve this goal, I examined 1631 ethnic design pieces from Prêt à porter in Paris and Milano, predicting the future trend and foundation to further the new fashion culture.
First, I identified its definition, background and concept. Second, the 2005 S/S collection in Paris and Milano to those in 2010 F/W were went through examinations, such as its pace of changing and the types of ethnic images in the contemporary fashion, the local features, comparison between images, based on the styles categorized in the preliminary research.
Third, I analyzed the trend and predicted the future trend.
The results are like below.
First, the theoretical research revealed that the Ethnic trends reflect the reactionism to the past ethnic origin, incorporating with the Japanese style boom in 70s, affecting a lot to the date.
Second, there are 8 categories of ethnic styles. the African style is dominant, followed by Indian, Japanese, Chinese, South American styles with the similar proportion in both collections. For the last part, Paris collection showed Middle Eastern, North American and Korean styles in order and Milano collection showed Korean, North American, Middle Eastern styles in order.
Third, the annual changing pace showed decrease between 2005(14.9%), 2006(12.8%) to 2007(8.2&) but showed radical increase after 2008, resulting 20% increase (27.3%) from 2007 in 2010.
Fourth, F/W season showed 1.4 times more ethnic pieces than those of S/S season. Both showed great part of African and Indian styles.
Fifth, between those two collections(Paris and Milano), Paris collection showed 3.6 times more ethnic pieces than those of Milano collection because of its more artistic orientation.
Sixth, the trend after 2005 shows splendorous images and combination of different images. Its orientation is pluralistic tendency that different ethnic styles co-exist. The majority of the style is bright and colorful colors with transparency and preeminent orange color.
Seventh, the contemporary ethnic images features compromised images that mix different components, traditional images that go back to the past tradition, natural images that escape from the modern industrial society, see-through look that adapts oriental ethnic components, and mysterious images that show body-conscious silhouette.
In conclusion, the adaptation of each different ethnic image to modern sense could result in the practical design that has a peculiar image of the culture and chances to introduce each culture to the others and find out the ethnic identity.
