This study aimed at looking into the relationship between a child's shyness and a mother's nurturing attitude, and if there was a difference depending on gender and age. Children between ages 3~5 and 355 out of 400 mothers were selected as subjects of this study, and ten children each from ages 3~5, hence, 30 in total were chosen for teachers to distribute the Child Shyness Rating Scale to the mothers and run a preliminary investigation after recollecting them. After running the preliminary investigation, there wasn't any problems with the questions and they seemed to be understood well, hence, were used as tools for this study.
In this study, the ⌜Child Shyness Rating Scale⌟, which is a modified version of the CSPS(Child Social Preference Scale) from Coplan, Parkash, O'Neil, & Armcr(2004) study was used to measure a child's shyness. Hence, Joo-Hee Park(2000)'s questionnaire, which is a modified version of Schaefer(1959), Beaker(1964), Mussen, Conger and Kagan(1969)'s study result. The collected data calculated the technical statistic on each variable ,and ran an analysis using analysis of variance and Pearson's product moment correlation depending on the matter of the study.
A summary of this study is as follows.
First, from looking at a child's overall shyness and difference in the aspects under it depending on the age, a child's overall shyness and the aspects under it didn't show any differences in terms of gender and age.
Second, from looking into the difference of aspects under a child's nurturing attitude depending on gender, it showed that boys had a higher level than girls in terms of the 'kind encouragement' aspect under a mother's nurturing attitude(F=4.63, p< .05).
Third, from looking at the aspects under a child's nurturing attitude in terms of age, it was found that the aspect of 'setting limits' in a mother's nurturing attitude showed an increase in its level as age increased(F=8.27, p<.001).
Fourth, from looking into the aspects under a child's shyness and a mother's nurturing attitude, as the aspect of kind encouragement and setting limits increased the level of conflict shyness decreased. Hence, as the nurturing attitude of refusal ignorance and over-protection increased the level of conflict shyness increase as well. Furthermore, as the level of kind encouragement and setting limits increased the level of social apathy decreased. Thus, a child's shyness and a mother's nurturing attitude could be seen as having some kind of a relation.
In conclusion, in the field of a mother's nurturing attitude her kind encouragement and setting limits were positive prediction factors in terms of a child's shyness, hence, a mothers refusal ignorance and over-protection was found to be a negative prediction factors in terms of a child's shyness, which tells us that there is a relation between a child's shyness and a mother's nurturing attitude. Therefore, we were able to prove the relation between a child's shyness and a mother's nurturing attitude through this study, and think that further study needs to be done on the understanding of child shyness and mothers' nurturing attitude, which could have an influence on the social development of children. Hence, diverse educational programs for parents of the present age need to be developed.
