The court sword dance (Geom-mu), also called Geomgee-mu, has the longest history among the remaining royal court dances in Korea.
The court sword dance, one of the royal court dances, had been further sophisticated when it was being established as one of the representative performances at various court banquets during the late Joseon Dynasty. The court sword dance is disseminated by many Ginyeo(female entertainer)s who were sent to the central royal court from many different regions across the country to be participating in court banquets. In this process, current forms of regional female entertainer's sword dance were created with featured characteristics of each region.
Through numerous Geommu poems and genre paintings created by many writers and painters during the Joseon Dynasty, we can notice that the female entertainer's sword dance had been performed nation-widely. This was possible because the female entertainer's sword dance was a highly refined dance in terms of its artistic values.
By examining costume of the royal court sword dance, this research aims to discover the original figure and the transformed shape of the sword dance along with the historic trend of change of the dance.
Firstly, I researched the transforming process of the sword dance costume by scrutinizing 『Ui-gwe(儀軌)』. As the sword dance costume was not mentioned in 『Ackhakquebeum(樂學軌範)』 which was written during the reign of King Seong-Jong(成宗), the sword dance was not popularly performed during the early Joseon Dynasty. Later on, according to the 7-word ancient poems(七言古詩), titled Gwanchanggwangmu, written by Kim Man-Jung during the reign of King Suk-Jong(肅宗), the sword dance was performed by maids in palaces without a mask.
As shown in the historical changes of the sword dance costume, performers wore Geumhyanghuypsu(金香挾袖) and Quaja(快子) as upper garments. The color of Quaja is indigo blue(Ah-Chung Color) in general and reddish purple sometimes. In most case Huypsu(挾袖) is Geumhyanghuypsu but this fact is not recorded in most of the official documents. This Hyupsu have been worn inside the Quaja.
Secondly, the material for the sword dance costume is Gapsa, which has diverse patterns and colors even in a same garment depending on different parts of the garment. I selected the material which has the most similar characteristics presented in the old literatures. Because different cloths with different colors were used even in one garment, I utilized the Muslin technique in order to discern the amount of cloth necessary for each part of a garment.
Thirdly, I presented the process of natural dyeing to show how the coloring of cloth has been conducted to compose the garments. The necessary colors were reddish purple(紫的), red(紅), yellow(黃) and indigo blue(鴉靑). For creating these colors, I used Caesalpinia sappan(蘇木), Gardenia jasminoides(梔子) and Persicaria tinctorium dyeing. In red color dyeing, I repeated the Caesalpinia sappan dyeing three times in order to raise the endurance of the color against water washing process. For yellow color dyeing, I used Gardenia jasminoides with mordant. In indigo blue dyeing, I applied mordant to Persicaria tinctorium dyeing after re-dying with Gardenia jasminoides.
In this research I aimed to arrange and analyze the sword dance costume in the Joseon Dynasty. Based on those basic data, I intended to discover the original root and the transforming process of the sword dance costume. I expect this research contributes to modernization of Korean traditional costume by re-interpreting it to combine with contemporary values.
