A Study on Exhibition of Archives
based on the Characteristics of archives

Archives should not only keep archives but also promote using archives. For this, it is effective to provide the meaning and value of archives to users throughout an exhibition based on characteristics of archives. The exhibition is the service to stimulate usage of archives by promoting archives and the interface which Archives meet the public and could be connected with image of Archives. It also serves users an opportunity to see archives and identify the presence of Archives. Moreover, it gives chances to assess archives easily to someone who may not intend and, become learning space.
Even though the exhibition of Archives is similar with museums, archives as an object are different from museums' because of characteristics of archives. The exhibition of antiques, art and traditional things is aiming to inspire attendances emotionally or depict past cultures. On the other hand, archives are composed of documents which are produced naturally and have the organic relation. Moreover, most of them are preserved in Archives for usage of future.
Generally, archives have the context which interacts with external environment. Accordingly, Archives should plan an exhibition reflecting the organic relation and context of archives. For this, the exhibition should keep organic relation and reveal social change. In addition, Archives should select themes of that which make value of archives emphasize throughout interacting contexts and contents of archives with society. Therefore, Archives should choose proper themes and could reveal the value of archives to users.
The exhibition of Archives has various effects. It visualizes the existence of Archives and creates added value by selling products related exhibits like books. It can be also connected to services such as a filed trip. Furthermore, it suggests the direction of archives management. The systemic management to build information of archives is the basis in order to select archives for exhibition. Therefore, Archives needs to implement the method of exhibition based on characteristics of archives. Then, Archives should exhibit value of archive and, attract potential users.
Accordingly, this study examined the exhibition of national Archives in United States of America, England and Australia. According to survey, these Archives serve many exhibits thru online and offline. In addition, Archives hosted an exhibition with interesting themes which may help users figure out context and contents of archives. Compared with Archives abroad, Nara Archive in Korea has exhibited a few archives and exhibition themes have not been various.
Consequently, this study is going to suggest that what characteristics of archive is and how these characteristics work for the exhibition. This study can help know differences between Archives and museums as well as clear exhibition effects based on characteristics of archives. I hope this paper can contribute to establishing the basic exhibition method and direction of Archives in Korea.
