The purpose of this study is to analyze the significance of the sea in Korean oceanic dramas and dramaturgy involving the configuration of the ocean. This is because there is a need to study how human life is materialized through the ocean depicted in drama.
The subjects selected for this paper-「A Travel to Mueu Island」 by Ham, Se-Deok, 「A Ship Filled With Fish」 by Chun, Seung-Se, and 「A Fish -man」 by Lee, Kang-Baek-are all pieces that adequately depict the contemporary situation through the ocean. The ocean reflected in each piece is significant in the three aspects of oppression, contradiction, and irrationality.
Firstly, the sea is a place of oppression. 「A Travel to Mueu Island」 by Ham, Se-Deok is a tragedy about the conflict between adults who do not accept new technologies and wish to live by the old fishing methods and a boy who pursues a new way of life, in the end of which the boy is sacrificed. The sea in this piece is depicted as the place in which the boy who strives for a new way of life is oppressed by the desire of adults who cannot overcome their pre-modern ways of thinking. The sea in the drama of Ham, Se-Deok represents such a stage of oppression and the fishermen also face a tragic fate because of such oppression.
Secondly, the sea is a place of contradiction. 「A Ship Filled With Fish」 by Chun, Seung-Se is about the tragic lives of fishermen who fail to adapt to modern civilization. In the piece, the characters' desire for a full ship represents the modern greed brought on by capitalism. However, in contradiction to that greed, the main character clings on to traditional fishery methods. The sea is the setting for such a discrepancy between the means and the goal. Such a contradictory view of the sea results in the destruction of the ship, instead of a full ship.
Thirdly, the sea is a place of irrationality. 「A Fish -man」 by Lee, Kang-Baek shows us the selfish desires of man discovered through the red tide and the submersion of a pleasure boat. The ocean, full of selfish wishes that dicated you can die in order for me to live, is an irrational place in which life and death, dispair and hope are overturned. Here, the sea reflects the distorted modern society in which communication is lost and the people's silence and noise prevail.
The dramaturgy of oceanic dramas are in accordance with that of traditional drama and narrative drama. In the course of developing the main character's tragic life leading up to the destruction of his ship, Chun, Seung-Se effectively applies to his plot the factors of tragedy taught by Aristotle. On the other hand, by pursuing narrative drama factors such as story-in-story, direction, and anti-illusional stages, Ham, Se-Deok and Lee, Kang-Baek imply that the responsibility for the sea becoming a tragic place lies in part with society.
As such, Korean oceanic dramas depicts the reality of our changing society from the pre-modern times to the present through the ocean. Such change shows us that the sea in Korean oceanic dramas changed from a realistic area into a philosophical one according to the times. Therefore, in the future, Korean oceanic dramas must create aesthetics specific to oceanic dramas based on the philosophical analysis of our society, so as to meet and enhance the expectations of our readers.
