The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cognitive
behavior group counseling program on body image satisfaction and
interpersonal relations of obese children.
The research questions were posed as follows: First, what is the effect
of the cognitive behavior group counseling program on body image
satisfaction of obese children? 1-1, does the cognitive behavior group
counseling program develope physical attraction of obese children? 1-2,
does the cognitive behavior group counseling program develope physical
strength of obese children? 1-3, does the cognitive behavior group
counseling program develope physical conditions of obese children?
Second, what is the impact of the cognitive behavior group counseling
program on interpersonal relations of obese children? 2-1, does the
cognitive behavior group counseling program develope role-propensity of
obese children? 2-2, does the cognitive behavior group counseling
program develope social propensity of obese children? 2-3, does the
cognitive behavior group counseling program develope expression
propensity of obese children?
The subjects in this study were 20 selected children out of 23 fourth
to sixth graders, who were diagnosed with obesity at the result of a
physical examination in J elementary school, Y city, Cheonnam province
in 2008.
They were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control
group with 10 each. And then only the experimental group took part in a
11-session cognitive behavior group counseling program for 11 weeks
prepared by this researcher. The cognitive behavior group counseling
program used in this study was based on Kim Seon-ju(2004), Mun
Geum-young(2005) and Oh Soon-saeng's program and concerned to suit
the purpose of the study.
The instruments used in this study were body image test and Personal
relationship propensity instruments.
The body image test was Shields(1984)'s and Shin Gwan-ho(1996)
adapted it for elementary students. This test has 3 subordinate factors:
physical attraction, physical strength, physical conditions. Each item has 5
scales from very unsatisfied to very satisfied and high score means the
body image is positive.
For Personal relationship propensity instruments (PRPI), we employed
the material An beom-hi's 'Diagnosis of personal relationship propensity',
1985, adapted for elementary schools by Sin Man-cheol(1992) and added
positive and negative interpersonal relations after multiple regression
analysis by Park Young-shin(2003).
The result of the study was as following. The cognitive behavior group
counseling program was effective with improving body image satisfaction.
It also showed rising tendency of all the 3 subordinate factors of body
image satisfaction: physical attraction, physical strength, physical
conditions.
The cognitive behavior group counseling program led to improving the
interpersonal relations. It also boosted up social propensity and
expression propensity.
The above-mentioned findings illustrated that the cognitive behavior
group counseling program exercised a favorable influence on enlarging
the obese children's satisfaction with their body image and interpersonal
relations. The cognitive behavior group counseling program can help the
obese children have more positive body images and eventually it will lead
the children to happier school life.
