경찰의 가정폭력 대응실태 및 개선방안에 관한 연구 = A Study on Realities about Police Response and Counterplan on Domestic Violence in Korea

Domestic violence, especially female spouse assault, goes beyond just an individual's pain and sorrow and has become serious social problem. Domestic violence has been related to problems such as juvenile delinquency and female assault. Furthermore, it can result in murder of attacker. In addition, domestic violence can ruin the victim's life irreplaceable and rest of the family members, too. We have concerned, however, about violence while we had little focus and concern about domestic violence.
We can suggest the reasons for prevailing of domestic violence in Korea: we still have sex discrimination and patriarchal thoughts, and police intervention at the crime scene hasn't served its role properly. It is very important for police to intervene at the right time and in a proper way to prevent and response the domestic violence. Still, police hasn't taken proper actions and the interventions hasn't taken place at the right time, either.
Therefore, it is needed to improve the intervention strategies of police, who takes charge of the affair, to response more effectively. Unlike other violent crimes, domestic violence has a special characteristic that offender and victims share the life environment together and have intimate relationship. So all the criminal justice process related to domestic violence has to be connected closely and mutually to protect the victims and remove the possibility of recidivism.
This study incorporates the realities on response of police on domestic violence and problems in doing so and suggests the counterplan for it. It is needed to study the characteristics and nature of domestic violence to understand exact realities and to respond more effectively. So this study suggests the definition, dynamic structure and characteristic of domestic violence, and then, grasp the situation of domestic violence and realities of police response. Based on these findings, this study argues the problems at hand and the changes for the better.
