Individual donation has not received sufficient attention although it composes significant part of nonprofit resources. Therefore, I attempt to examine the characteristics of individual givers as well as factors that lead to such actions. The purpose of this study is to understand individual givers' donation characteristics which covers great portion of nonprofit resources, and the affecting factors.
The survey was carried out on 400 male and female participants over 20 years old living in Dongduchun city and 370 were received among those. Participants went through structured survey in self-entry method and the data were processed with SPSS12.0 Windows program.
The findings are as follows.
First, individual givers donated more on regular basis(58.9%) than on irregular basis(41.1%), which sums up about 1.5 time more. This shows that the impression of donation is long-term as well as on regular basis in our society. Also, people mostly donated by automatic transfer system(46.4%). It is assumed that this is characteristics of givers donating on regular basis. However, when looked at the purpose of donation, it is biased in helping 'the disabled(42.7%)' and 'children and adolescents(34.9%)'. This phenomenon shows that donation preferences reflect subjective standards rather than definitive standards of individual givers and their concerns of the social minorities. Individual givers have decided to donate through recommendation of belonging group(37%), and encouragement of friends(15.6%). This shows that individual givers' donation direction can be affected by people surrounding them.
Secondly, sociology of population analysis shows that, donors between age of 20 and 50 start their first donation by encouragement of others. This group undertake regular donation by written notice bill. It also turned out that people with higher educational background tend to have more experience in individual giving. Also on occupational perspective, people who have regular income, such as white collar and blue collar workers, show a habit of regular basis donation. In addition, their donation has positive corelation with income level. Therefore, highly educated population group, aged between 30-40 withholding stable occupation, is more deeply involved in donation.
Thirdly, sociology of population analysis based on intention of donation, female group(81.6%) donate more compared to males group(72.5%). Also male(3.38) had better general understanding of donation than female(3.23). According to marriage status, female(81.6%) scored higher than male(72.5%), and married personal(80.5%) had more positive minds on donation than singles(73.6%). Also male(3.38) had better general understanding of donation than female(3.23).
According to education level, those who received higher education above college level(68.2%) showed more interest in donation. This could be interpreted that educational level and donation has positive correlation. White collar(85.5%) and blue collar85.8%) workers have more affirmative approach in donation due to their regular income, and more income level means more willingness in donation. Therefore, people overall are ford of donation, and within this population group, people with higher educational level, regular as well as higher income level showed more interest in donation.
This research will be a groundwork, working as a basic data in analyzing individual givers' characteristics as well as factors that play role in their donation.
