The purpose of this study is to explore the relations among forgiveness, parents' child-rearing attitudes and elementary school students school adjustment.
For this purpose, the following research questions were formulated:
First, what are the relations between children's forgiveness and parents' child-rearing attitudes?
Second, what are the relations between children's forgiveness and school adjustment(aggression, anxiety)?
Third, what are the relations between parents' child-rearing attitudes and school adjustment(aggression, anxiety)?
Forth, is there any indirect effect of parents' child-rearing attitudes through children's forgiveness on school adjustment?
The subjects of this study were 286 sixth grade elementary school students(152 boys and 134 girls) in Jeonju.
To measure children's forgiveness, Enright Forgiveness Inventory for Children(2007) were used. To measure parents' child-rearing attitudes, Parents' Child-rearing Attitudes Scale(1993) were used. To measure school adjustment of elementary school students, Aggression Drive Scale(1998), Manifest Anxiety Scale(1990) were used.
To analyze the collected data, factor analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling analysis were used.
The results of data analysis could be summarized as follows:
First, it is shown that children's forgiveness and parents' child-rearing attitudes have the significant positive relations. It shows parents` child-rearing attitude can help children's forgiveness development.
Second, there are significant negative relations between children's forgiveness and school adjustment(aggression, anxiety). Children's forgiveness reduces school maladjustment behavior like the aggression or anxiety.
Third, parents' child-rearing attitudes and school adjustment(aggression, anxiety) also have the significant negative relations. Parents` child-rearing attitudes reduce school maladjustment behavior like the aggression or anxiety.
Forth, there are the direct effects of parents' child-rearing attitudes which predict the school adjustment(aggression, anxiety) and indirect effects through children's forgiveness which predict the school adjustment(aggression, anxiety).
According to this study, parents' child-rearing attitudes predict the school adjustment(aggression, anxiety), and parents' child-rearing attitudes have mediate effects on school adjustment through children's forgiveness. These results provide theoretical and empirical grounds which could used for guiding children in home and school. Also, it could used for basic information in related research.
