국문 초록 (Abstract)

환상예술과 관련된 용어들은 매우 혼란스럽게 사용되고 있다. 게다가 기독교계 일부에서는 환상문학을 불태우는 등의 민감한 반응을 내보이기 까지 한다. 판타지는 비현실을 추구함으로 삶의 주체가 될 수 있도록 도와주는 도구이며 그것은 판타지가 갖고 있는 독특한 요소들, 즉 무한한 가능성의 세계, 상상력을 매개로 한 광대한 자유의 표현, 이를 통한 현실에의 전복성, 인간이 갈망하는 ‘소망성취’(wish fulfillment)의 세계, 그리고 무엇보다 현실 너머의 인간 본질 탐구라는 삶에 대한 적극적 반응이 가진 힘에 기인한다고 볼 수 있다.
일반인들의 관심이 과학 공상을 비롯하여 상상력을 자극하는 쪽으로 많이 기울어져 있는 것을 볼 수가 있다. 아마도 너무 기계적이고 숫자적인 삶에서부터의 탈피를 추구하는 현대인의 모습을 잘 반영하고 있다고 보여진다. 동시에 조지 루카스가 한때 남긴 말을 통하여 추리할 수 있는 사실이 있다. "<첫 번째 이야기> (The First Episode)를 최근까지 기다렸다가 만든 이유는 이제 와서야 자신의 상상력을 표현할 수 있을 만큼 컴퓨터 그래픽 수준이 높아졌기 때문이다." 즉 요사이 많은 판타지 문학이 영상화되어 쏟아져 나오는 이유는 마침내 특수 효과(Special Effects) 기술의 발전으로 저자들의 상상력을 영상으로 표출해 내는데 충분한 능력이 개발되었기 때문이라고 말할 수 있다.
본 논문은 현재 쓰이고 있는 판타지의 개념을 재정리하고, 그것이 판타지 영화속에 나타난 신학적 영상의 변화는 무엇이 이며 영화에서 어떻게 나타나는지를 찾아보고자 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 크게 두 개의 부분으로 나뉜다. 첫 번째 부분에서는 일반적으로 통용되고 있는 '판타지 영화'의 개념을 재정리하고, 두 번째 부분에서는 판타지 영화에 나타난 신학적 영상매체의 변화와 표현기법을 분석하였다. 판타지의 개념을 정리하기 위해서 여러 분야에서 논의하고 있는 판타지의 특징에 대해 살펴보고, 그것이 무엇보다도 판타지영화 속에서 신학적 전달 매체로 어떻게 반영되는지를 살펴 보았다.
판타지에 드러나는 지배적 담론들은 문명 시대적 영향 하에 놓여 있다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 그러한 차이보다는 일반적인 판타지의 핵심 개념들을 찾는 것과 판타지 영화속에 신학적 전달 매체의 변화, 시각화를 살펴 보았다.
결과적으로 기독교 환상문학의 고전으로 인정받는 C.S 루이스의‘나니아연대기’이나 톨킨의 반지의 제왕와 같은 작품들에 대해서도 ‘주술성’의 위험을 경고하는 그리스도인들은 항상 있어 왔다. 그러나 톨킨이나 루이스가 신화나 옛이야기의 양식을 사용한 것은 이러한 설화의 세계와 복음 사이에는 유사성이 있다고 판단했기 때문이다. 이들은 훌륭한 신화나 동화가 복음을 부분적으로 반영한다고 보았고, 동시에 복음이야말로 진정한 신화요, 진정한 동화라고 파악한 것이다. 이들은 그리스도 이전의 훌륭한 ‘이교사상(paganism)’이 지혜를 가득 담고 있는 ‘선복음(pre-evangelism)’이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 동시에 그들은 이교 사상의 한계를 깨닫고 있었으며 또한 복음의 절대성과 유일성을 견지했다. 어떤 의미에서 그들은 환상문학 작업은 신화와 옛이야기의 형식을 통해 독자가 복음을 받아들일 수 있는 준비 작업이었다고 말할 수 있다. 그리스도 이전의 훌륭한 이교도(pagan) 신화작가가 그리스도를 모른 채 ‘복음을 위한 준비(preparatio evangelica)’ 작업을 했다면, 그들은 그리스도인으로서 그러한 작업을 감당했다.
