When we look into the inner part of art history, we can find a spiritual center pole which rules the times. We can say it is nothing but historic conditions and the circumstances of the times. On this ground a work is created by the subjective reception of an individual artist as well as his creative eye. This tells us a point that the relationship between the times and a writer who reads out the times is a very important factor which forms the width and depth of an art work in art history. Accordingly the circumstances of the times and the spiritual pole of a writer are important inner motives of a work in creating the work. Since《Come and see me》 has been produced, as a part of this, based on an actual accident called chain - murder at Hwasung which started to occur from September of 1989, it deserves to be called a play which has endowed reality to artistic value, and which has achieved success in pulling out the exploration of subtle substance called truth.
First of all, when we review it from the context of the times, it was enough to arouse audiences' curiosity from the point that the play was produced based on actual murders. Moreover, an additional point that the writer clearly suggested his creative interpretation and intention in the play makes it clear as to why this work has been repeatedly put on the stage and applauded by audience.
Secondly, in character setting, the writer tried to have more humanistic and cubic prospects by endowing the variety of characteristics. Investigation of the murders in the play gets more and more complicated in mystery by the three suspects who have mental problems showing the character of heretics who refuse to compromise with reality. It is the device by which the writer Kim expressed the question to the non-existence of truth, which he originally intended to ask, in most dramatic way, and also it is the element which leads spectators into endless confusion.
Eventually, answers to questions like 'What is truth?' and 'Does truth exist?' is entangled with two knobs of affirmation and denial. As detective Kim comes to a catastrophic conclusion, this non-existence perception of truth turns to the perception that truth exist but it is difficult to discern. As he mentioned in front of the audience, he comes to confront with the dual natures of truth and untruth.
And also, one other thing to note in the play is the command of realistic dialogues and the plot of quadruple character roles by one actor. As the writer himself snooped actual sites many times for information to endow more reality and put enormous efforts to materialize cubic human image, we can see the traces of his elaboration soaking out from the play. As to the cruelty and sultriness of the murders, genuine horror of detective drama was well sublimated to the writers unique funny laugh element by the various tiny happenings between voluble detective Kim and Miss Kim.
I, the researcher, have been in agony, through the study on these characters, as to how can I demonstrate it on the actual stage. On the issue of digesting ability of multiple roles by one actor, the writer tried to express his kind of unique creativity with clear understanding of the writer and director, and to more naturally visualize the inner world in order to make the stage as the place where the audience can breathe and react together with performers. Accordingly, this play became a medium to the researcher, which made the researcher try to explore the hidden truth with close relationship with audience.
The purpose of this study is to explore the essential qualities of a play through the various elements of the play such as the actual production process, directing, characters, scenes, stage, and costumes, etc. At the same time, I would hope that, by this study, the artistic value of《 Come and see me》can be proved once again and becomes stimulus to make better plays.
