The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of parent-adolescence communication methods and ego-resiliency by analyzing the effects of high school students' perceived parent-adolescence communication and ego-resiliency on psychosocial adjustment, and then to have application the results to the field of counselling and education.
In order to meet this purpose, the chosen subject of this study is first, What the parent-adolescent communication perceived by highschool students influence the psychosocial adjustment, second, what the ego-resiliency perceived by highschool students influence the psychosocial adjustment, finally, What the parent-adolescent communication and ego-resiliency perceived by highschool students influence the psychosocial adjustment.
In this study, 367 students were selected from 2nd or 3rd grade in high school located in Chungbuk and Jeonam. The Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory : PCAI, Ego-Resiliency Scale : ER, Self-perception profile for adolescents and Korean-Youth Self Report : K-YSR were used to measure self-perceived Parent-Adolescence Communication types, Ego-Resiliency and the degree of Psycho-social Adjustment. With SPSS 14.0 software, Descriptive statistics, product moment correlation and regression analysis were carried out to analyze and evaluate the collected data.
The results of this study are as follow ; First, It appears that the parent-adolescence communication type perceived by high school students has effects on the psychosocial adjustment. In other words, the more openly, high school students perceived they communicate with parents, the higher levels of positive self-perception such as academic, social competence and self-esteem they had. The more problematically, high school students recognized they communicated with their parents, the higher levels of depression or Anxiety they had.
To be specific on self-perception, father-adolescence's open communication was the most influential predictor to academic competence and social competence, mother-adolescence's open communication was the most influential predictor to self-esteem.
To be explicit on problem behavior syndrome, mother-adolescence's problematic communication was the most substantial predictor to depression and Anxiety, father-adolescence's problematic communication was the most crucial predictor to delinquency and aggression.
Second, ego-resiliency perceived by the highschool students has an effect on the psychosocial adjustment. The highschool students who have higher level of ego-resiliency had higher level of academic, social competence, self-esteem and lower depression/anxiety. To be specific on ego-resiliency, the emotion control for academic competence, the vitality for social competence, the optimism for self esteem were found as the most important predictors for each. When the results are looked over to explain problem behavior syndrome, optimism for depression/anxiety, social relationship for delinquency, vitality for aggression were revealed as the most important predictors for each.
Finally, this study verified the effects of parent-adolescence's communication, ego-resiliency perceived by the highschool students on the psychosocial adjustment.
So to speak, as it is rated that which variable is the most relevant to each psychosocial adjustment factor.
It is showed that the emotion control for academic competence, the vitality for social competence, the optimism for self esteem were the most important predictors that had significant effects on the psychosocial adjustment, and the optimism for depression/anxiety, the problematic parent-adolescence type for delinquency and aggression were the most influential predictors that had significant effects on the psychosocial adjustment.
In conclusion, the types of parent-adolescence communication and the ego-resiliency were the important variables that had significant effects on the psychosocial adjustment. Furthermore, the result of this study showed specifically what variables have effects on psychosocial adjustment and maladjustment. To improve student's psychosocial adjustment according to these results, the effort to apply advisable parent-adolescence communication skills is needed. In addition to this, the development of various programs for improvement of ego-resiliency and application of the programs to school field is demanded.
