The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the adaptation of foreign women to Korean society through marriage to Korean nationals and the cause of them. And then, through investigating their needs in Korea, this study end to suggest some implication for social work practice to help them.
The subjects were the 16 immigrant women living in Yeosu by purposive sampling method. The research was carried out through focused interviews, with help of Language Education Center of Chonnam National University.
Interviews were 10 times from November, 2006 and were included 4 times group interviews.
The results of this study are as follows
First, the factors affecting the adaptation of immigrants women are difficulties of communication of Korean, satisfaction in marriage, adaptation of Korean culture, support from Korean society(government, nongovernment, friends and husband) and financial problem.
Second, there are three steps which immigrant women have been experienced for adaptation to Korean society through the marriage.
'Perfect adaptation', 'Partial adaptation' and 'Non-adaptation' are three steps. These are classified of social affecting and financial adaptation factors
From the above finding the study suggests the followings
For successful adaptation of immigrant women to Korean society, total care system is need which are included relationship with husband and his relatives and social, cultural and financial adaptation.
Promoting employ program for the financial adaptation should be served. Futhermore infra related with companies, schools and departments of government have to builded for immigrant women's employ after joining the program.
Supporting system for immigrant women's competitive ability in community they are living are needed.
In conclusion, this study confirmed that immigrant women's adaptation are effected from difficulties of communication of Korean, satisfaction in marriage, adaptation of Korean culture, support from Korean society(government, nongovernment, friends and husband) and financial problem.
therefore, to reduce immigrant women's marital conflicts, various practical approached are needed including culture perspective.
The results of this study suggested some suggestions to promote immigrant women's adaptation to Korean society ; building support system for reduce conflicts in their family and community, changing the sight for immigrant women, making volunteer groups for immigrant women.
