The Soul's Journey into God을 통해 고찰한다.

Since human beings were created in God’s own image, (Genesis 1:27) our inner hearts have been longing and thirsting for God as the deer longs for streams of water. (Psalm 42:2) It was the source of hunger and thirst for God that encouraged the predecessors of faith to take their journey to Him, and their spiritual footsteps have been handed down to us as prayer methods.
In this thesis, diverse ways of prayer will be discussed by distinguishing between the Affirmative and the Negative Way; in the Affirmative Way, any substance in the world is believed to help us understand and get to know God, while in the Negative Way, any explanatory devices such as conceptual descriptions of God, language, and sensual images are considered to shield God, who is true nature itself.
In both the ‘Affirmative’ and the ‘Negative Way’, many practical methods of prayer are present, among which Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer were chosen in this thesis for the Affirmative and the Negative Way respectively because Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer have been widely spread since 1970 in Korea and abroad, and the Pastoral Institute of Korea in 2005 under the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea have recommended these prayers as an alternative for a Pseudo-Spirituality Movement. Additionally, Contemplative Outreach Ltd. International Office led by Thomas Keating promoted Lectio Divina as well as Centering Prayer and the number of people who practice both Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer is increasing in Korea, requiring the understanding of interrelation between Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer in terms of ministry. Indeed, this reserach was called for by current needs. The contents of this article are as follows.
In Chapter One, the preface, background and purpose of the research are described, and for the way of the research, the documentary method and case studies are used.
In Chapter Two, by studying the terminological and historic origin of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer, it is shown that both Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina have originated from the hermits of the desert, which have been promoted by the church since the Second Vatican Council in order to revive the traditional practice of contemplation based on the Gospels.
In Chapter Three, Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are examined in a theological sense based on the mystical theology by Dionysius, and introduces the theoretical ground of Centering Prayer presented by Thomas Keating. Moreover, The Soul’s Journey into God by St. Bonaventure is discussed, which shows that Lectio Divina as the Affirmative Way and Centering Prayer as the Negative Way are joined together eventually in the mystical union with God.
In Chapter Four, a couple of ways to practice Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are given. To begin with, for Lectio Divina, Scholastic Lectio Divina and Monastic Lectio Divina ways are present, whose similarities and differences are assessed; the Scholastic Lectio Divina way is an active reading process, which benefits from intellectual reasoning, while the Monastic Lectio Divina way reduces the involvement of active reasoning, which follows the heart rather than the intelligence, and follows the action of the Holy Spirit respectively. Meanwhile, the methods for Centering Prayer by Basil Pennington and Thomas Keating are explained, both of whom points out that the core of Centering Prayer is the consent to the presence and the action of God Who resides in us and a sacred word is used as a symbol of our consent. In other words, through the internalization of a sacred word, which is a symbol of consent and intention, a sacred word can lead us to its aim, the presence of God beyond language and concept. Finally, as a direction which helps to practice of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina I will introduce the way which I used to use in the prayer meetings that I lead now.
In Chapter Five, the dynamics of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are unfolded through documentary research and case study. The dynamics of Lectio Divina, in the first place, involves the Four Moments, which take place in our receptive response to the action of Holy Spirit Who works within us. Case studies also present the individual disposition and the depth of relationship with God, while the movement of the Holy Spirit can affect the dynamics of the spiritual meanings of the Bible. Additionally, the dynamics of Centering Prayer are shown to emerge as that of purification and healing in the Four Moments of Centering Prayer during the steady practice of praying and the consequent growth of intimacy with God.
In Chapter Six, a main part of this thesis, we shall discuss the interrelationship between Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer through documentary research and case studies, which is believed to be a novel attempt because no previous work on this subject has been done. First, Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are distinctively characterized, and the Four Moments of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are compared. A documentary research helps explain the interplays between these two prayers; Centering Prayer provides a time for external silence, which is often lacking of among today’s people, and fosters personal meeting with God by reducing the major obstacles of Lectio Divina, which, in turn, motivate people to practice Centering Prayer. Consequently, Centering Prayer can be deepened by love and faith toward God, which have grown through the course of Lectio Divina.
Finally, the significance of practicing Lectio Divina along with Centering Prayer is examined in questionnaires and meditation notes which have been written by those who had continuously gone through four to five years of training; the result of these case studies shows that Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina can hopefully help people in modern society who have a spiritual thirst, build deeper relationship with God. Furthermore, to all the believers who long for union with God, Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer operate to keep their life healthy and full, as do inhalation and exhalation, and leads them to the transforming union with God.
In Chapter Seven, the results, meanings and the limits and proposals of this research are given.
