The purpose of this study was to develop consistent and valid the Korean version of the posttraumatic growth inventory(K-PTGI). Although there were a lot of individuals who frequently reported that they experienced perceived positive changes as well as negative changes after psychological trauma, the trauma studies have been focused in the negative syndrome after trauma up to the present in Korea. More recently, traumatic events related in positive transformation' theme was entered to the area of the psychology studies. Tedeschi and Calhoun(1996) suggested the term 'posttraumatic growth' from individuals who experienced perceived positive psychological changes after psychological trauma and developed the PTGI which can assess this phenomenon. Tedeschi and Calhoun(1996) developed U.S. PTGI to assess reliable growth after traumatic events. This study was made to develop the Korean version of posttraumatic growth inventory and explored measuring psychological properties by translation and converse translation work. Total 751 participants who had experienced traumatic events were asked to complete a KPTGI, Anxiety(STAI-KYZ) and Depression(BDI) scale, Impact event scale(IES), Social Desirability(SDS), Gratitude Questionaire(GQ-6), and Multidimensional Coping Scale.
For study 1, Item analysis, internal consistency and factor structures of the scale were investigated with 133 male and 167 female Korean university students and adult samples. Study 1 was explored factor structures using exploratory factor analysis(principle component analysis, varimax) by SPSS 12.0. Next, study 1 were also investigated with 205 male and 208 female, various group(269 university students and adult samples, 144 PTSD patients) and was to examine factor structures validity using confirmatory factor analysis by Amos 4.0. Additionally, 38 university students besides 413 samples was administered in order to determine test-retest reliability over two months.
Study 2 examined convergent validity, discriminant validity and criterion related evidence of validity of the scale using pearson's correlation with 153(95 female, 58 male)university students of the study 1's 413 sample and 118 PTSD patients
The results of this study were as follows : The result of study 1's EPA with KPTGI, 16 items of original 21 items loaded differentially on four factor. The reliability(internal consistency, test-retest reliability) of KPTGI was fairly high compare to those of U.S. version. The result of study 1's CFA supported KPTGI's four factor structure. They also support the construct validity and reliability of the KPTGI. The result of study 2 supported convergent, discriminant and criterion related validity of the scale.
In conclusion, results of the study were discussed in relation to the limitation, applicability and improvement of the scale and future directions for further study were also discussed in relation to positive psychology, posttaumatic response and previous posttraumatic growth studies.
