The purpose of this Delphi study was to look into the possible, probable, and preferable future of education in three areas: technology, business and school partnerships, and the curriculum and design of the learning environment. The goal and intent were to bring together a Panel of Experts who would provide ideas and insights about K-12 American education in the future.
The study was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the Preparatory, the Delphi Panelists were identified through a non-random nomination process that included leaders in the field of education. In the second phase, the Principal Phase, the Panelists participated in four rounds. The first was an open-ended questionnaire, following by three iterative rounds of Event Statements, which were created from the Panelists' responses to the Preliminary Questionnaire. The Panelists provided insight into the importance, probability, feasibility and desirability of the Event Statements, as well as the projected year of occurrence.
The study suggested that educators take a more pro-active approach to planning by soliciting the input of experts in the field of the future of education. As well, the need to examine the new literacies which are evolving from the explosion of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) was suggested.
