이청준의 「이어도」 서사전략 연구 = Department of Korean language and literature graduate School Mokpo National University

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 이청준의 「이어도」에 나타나는 시·공간에 초점을 맞추어 서사 전략을 분석함으로써 내재적 역할을 규명하는 데 목적을 두었다.
2장에서는 「이어도」의 시·공간의 내재적 역할을 살펴 「이어도」의 공간 양상은 공간체험을 통해서 또 다른 공간을 환기하는 환유적 공간과 유사적 측면에서 '이어도'와 동일선상에 있는 은유적 공간으로 나누어진다.
이와 같은 시공간 전략은 현재화에 인식의 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 회상을 통해서 재현된 공간들은 일종의 역설과 예시로써 '이어도'를 다양한 방법으로 담당하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이는 이야기들을 현실의 세계인식 안으로 수렴하려는 작가의 전략이다.
이 과정에서 경험하는 반일상적인 양식들은 일상의 양식들에서 생기는 거리를 점층적으로 줄여가서 보다 확장된 인식의 변화를 꾀한다. 이런 체험공간은 작품의 결말을 유보함으로써 현재화가 지향하는 방향이 멈춤이 아닌 미래에 있음을 공간을 통해 확인할 수 있었다.
다음으로 의미적 기능을 담당했던 은유적 공간들이다. 이 공간들의 시간은 한 없이 느려지거나 멈춰있는 특성을 보이다. 이 공간들은 의미적 측면에서 모두 '이어도'임을 암시한다. '이어도'는 현실에서 위로로 죽어서는 피안으로 제주도사람들이 현실의 시름을 이겨내고 살아가게 하는 힘이다. 이런 의미이며 '이어도'는 삶과 죽음이라는 이중의 의미로 해석된다. 따라서, 공간을 바라보는 주체자의 태도에 따라 삶과 죽음은 선택될 수 있다는 태도인식을 보여준다.
3장에서는 이 공간들이 화자의 담론양식을 통해서 구체화되는 과정을 살펴보았다 담론양식의 측면에서 보면 인물들은 '이어도'를 인식하는 태도에서 일정의 일관성을 띤다. 이 태도는 부정방식과 긍정방식으로 나누고 다시 고정과 변화라는 두 가지 측면에서 그들의 태도를 해석할 수 있었다.
이런 담론의 양식화를 살펴보면 체험과정에서 보이는 천남석과 선우중위의 태도와 변화는 「이어도」가 현재화에서 구현하려는 삶과 죽음에 대한 태도였다. 선우중위는 부정과 긍정의 경계선상에 머무는 경향을, 천남석은 철저한 부정에서 비장한 긍정으로의 태도로 변화를 보였다. 천남석과 선우중위는 자신을 둘러싼 삶의 질서를 의심해 보고 혹은 기존의 사고의 틀을 버리고 새로운 틀을 받아들이는 과정에서 나타나는 삶의 태도 변화이다.
다양한 시선들을 현재 시점으로 모을 수 있는 것은 이야기를 이끌어 가는 화자를 변화시켜 가면서 가능해 진다. 또한, 복합시선을 자주 드러내는 것은 세계에 대한 이질적인 여러 시선을 한 공간에서 보여줄 수 있었다.
이처럼, 「이어도」는 이상과 현실, 죽음과 삶 등은 이원론적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 통합적으로 존재한다는 것이다. 이러한 통합적인 특성으로 귀결되어지는 이청준 작품의 시·공간 양상은 세계를 인식하는 새로운 방법을 제시하려는 작가의 서사전략에 있었음을 살필 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Lee chung-joon put a step forward into the literary world when received a literary award for his short story '5.1 - a ` simce his debut in 1965, he has completed many excellent works with endless quests as a writer. this is shownThis article analyzes Lee Chung Jun's 'Yieodo' aiming at investigating its strategy that he employed through time and places described in the story.
The next part of this article shows that the places in this novel can be divided by its different functions. One is creating a different place from Yieodo and the other is metaphorically describing the place similar to the island.
This use of time and places focus on the present. The places that are described through retrospection show that they create the island in a paradoxical way. Consequently, the author seems to try to make the story closer to the present. The readers' experiences that are different from those of other novels are expected to expand their understanding of the story. Further, it is expected that experiencing of the present leads to the future by delaying the conclusion of the story.
In this part, the metaphorical places in the novel are also discussed. Those places are described as slow or remained and actually same as the island. The island is known to the Jejudo people as the place where people can escape from their struggling after their lives. In this respect, the meaning of Yieodo can be interpreted as the life and the death. Therefore whether it is the place of the life or the death depend on the reader.
In the third part of this article looks at the way of talking to describe Yieodo in the novel. In fact, there are patterns in the way of understanding and talking about the island. The patterns include negative and positive and fixed and changeable attitude to see the island. Particularly, the variations in Cheon Nam Suk and lieutenant Sun Woo's talks and attitudes show their understanding of the life and death. Sun Woo tends to remain at the borderline between positiveness and negativeness and Cheon Nam Suk changes from complete denial of the life to acceptance of it. They are questioning the routine of their lives, break their past taken for granted and open to the new view to their lives.
The author seems to succeed to link all different characters in this story while changing the main presenter of the story. Further, the various perspectives in the story are frequently described to present them in one place.
In conclusion, the novel 'Yieodo' shows that the ideal world and real world, the life and death are not seperatable, rather they coexist in our lives. Therefore the author Lee Chung Gun suggests the new way to understand the world though his unique style of describing time and places in his novel.
