As there is an increase in population who suffer metal disorder in sudden changes of surrounding and complex structure of modern society, mental health gradually become a problem; as it needs more and more understanding of nursing requirement of the patient, its importance and necessity, it emphasizes the necessity of mental nursing.
This study was conducted to focus on understanding patients and providing them nursing intervention they need by describing nursing experienced by mental patients hospitalized in closed-ward with their view and real stories using daily life description method.
The subjects of this study were patients who hospitalized in special mental closed-ward, 3 patients in personal in-depth interview and 7 patients in focus group interview. Data was collected from December 2005 to March 2006. At the same time, it was analyzed until data was saturated. Data was interpreted to main events and situational meaning of pattern through the process that analyze the study subject and situational meaning with 3 step analysis such as event, subject and application by Agar (1980). Finally, data was reconstructed by finding universal subject or summarizing the pattern and summarized those again, thereby describing those.
The result of this study was as follows:
The nursing experienced by mental patient hospitalized in closed-ward were psychological, social and physical nursing.
1. In psychological nursing, it included being warmly received like a guest; being comforted; being understood; being respected; feeling warm heart; being treated with unconcern; being neglected; and receiving a cold reception.
2. In social nursing, it showed being protection; being legs; being restricted too much; receiving poor information; insufficient guide for future; receiving uncomfortable ward condition; and insufficient weekend activities.
3. In physical nursing, it involved immediate settlement of physical discomfort; assisting daily life performance; delaying the request; and neglecting personal and physical request.
The mental nurse provides qualified nursing in the position of the subject receiving nursing; for that, it is primarily necessary to understand how the nursing they experienced is and what nursing they need.
As a result of this study, it may help to understand how mental patients think about nursing of mental nurse in their view and to understand the type of nursing that is recognized positively or negatively. Especially, the point of qualitative psychological nursing that patients request is respect, understand and interest in the area of informal and common attitude and it shows that requests of social nursing was more than physical nursing. In addition, they experienced negative nursing rather than positive nursing; therefore, it indicates that they should be provided more considerable nursing.
It may confirm the content of continuous education for providing qualitative nursing centering patients by mental nurse by examining the difference between nursing patient experienced and it nurse provided on the basis of those results.
