      The cremation which was originated from the end period of the Three states 7^(th), and prevalent in the period of the Goryeo presented the easy passage into eternity of the Buddhist ideas about life and death, so it was prevailed rapidly from the king to the Buddhist those ages. But in the period of the last age of the Goryeo and of the Chosun, on account of the policy of worship Confucianism & oppression Buddhism, the cremation was prohibited, on the other hand the burial system was practiced strongly so the Confucian long burial culture became prevailed.
      Today, as the change of the government's and the people's ideas about death, the burial culture has become recognized, so the preference of the burial is highly accepted. Now that the need of pottery manufacture has been increased cause of the encouragement of cremation and charnel grave.
      There is a possibility that the cremation is changed to a form of long burial, so this study concentrated on expressing charnel vessel in various titles which can be met the modern needs.
      The charnel vessel is discriminated by sex, and that of the man is bigger and lower than that of woman to look weighty. Woman's one is smaller, narrower and higher to have symbolic meaning. The symbol of 12 belts and religion, and the meaning of 5 direction color do not change even the time is passing, so this study has classified them as below to produce the charnel vessel can show and guess the life of the dead.
      The first, the charnel vessel, classified to 12 ganji, was expressed by joining the 12 belts, which has different characters, with the figures of the animals.
      The second, the pottery manufacture, expressing religion, was classified using the whajangto onto the property lit to express the symbol of the Protestant Christian, Catholic and Buddhism which are representative religion of our country.
      The third, the pottery manufacture, expressing the job's species as the 5 direction colors, was represented by the use of 5 colors of our traditional one. This study has focus on the production of charnel vessel which has practicality, formative trait and originality.
      Every one is mortal. As the death is precious and pure so the remembrance of them and the courage of cherishing their memory is important.
      Man is said born form earth and return to it. The burial makes us feel comfortable because we were from the earth. But when we consider the seriousness of the lack of land and our environment, the long burial culture has to be changed.
      To have the ashes in the charnel vessel which has the personal character, like as to designate a burial place for them and take care of it, can be also another method of building long burial.
      I could feel the word of the death freshly and closely get to it through this work. While searching for many things to study, I got a good time for thinking about our funeral culture, and could take a good result of work which I hoped to get.
      Future study and zero investigate the first, foreign charnel vessel manufacture and use example, and study about a problem and improvement point of our country charnel vessel is necessary.
      The charnel vessel manufacture that now a creative product is requested to the second and designs charnel vessel , and the meaning was given to practically must be performed.
      I hope that the charnel vessel gets close to many people with more tranquility and also expect that the cremation to be a new contemporary culture.

      The cremation which was originated from the end period of the Three states 7^(th), and prevalent in the period of the Goryeo presented the easy passage into eternity of the Buddhist ideas about life and death, so it was prevailed rapidly from the king to the Buddhist those ages.
