The study aims at developing the education program for the parent with a young child, which is based on the buddhist thought and can be applicable in the Korean family culture. This program can help to solve the problems of bring up the child in the modern society. The outlines are as followings.
Firstly, Surveying the requests of mothers, whose children are educated at a Day Care Center of Buddhist Foundation, for developing the Parent Education Program.
Secondly, Developing the Parent Education Program based on Buddhist Thought.
Thirdly, Surveying the behavioral changes of mothers before and since performing the Parent Education Program based on Buddhist Thought.
Fourthly, Surveying their satisfaction after performing the Parent Education Program based on Buddhist Thought.
The survey of the requests has been done with the mothers whose children are educated at the Buddhist Day Care Center located in GyeongJu. 65 questionaries of 90 were returned for the statistics (return rate : 72.2%). The result showed that the parents' requests for the educational contents of the Parent Education Program are high in "talking method with children", "method of praising children", and "method of treating children with personality" in order. "Self development" in the results of the education for mothers themselves is the highest and the next is "Environmental problem."
In this study, the Parent Education Program was developed through four steps of "Establishment of education aims", "Selection and constitution of the contents", "Execution of the program", and "Evaluation of the program."
The first step of developing the parent education program is to establish the education aims.
The program is to provide the special knowledge for the development course of young child and the method to bring him up and to help to establish the stable parent-child relationship by providing the opportunity to learn and practice the methods and behaviors of child care based on the Buddhist Thought. In addition, it is focused on being a mature parent through the buddhist self discipline.
The second step is to select and construct the education contents. The program is composed of the contents orienting the balanced development of a child by learning the method of child care based on Buddhist Thought. Thus the research on the related buddhist documents and the parents' requires was performed.
The view toward children, the view about parent's role, and the view about parent-child relationship in original Buddhistic scriptures are constructed into the main contents of the program. The buddhist thought suitable for modern children education is applied. In addition, the appropriate methods of Buddhist sermon are reflected in the contents of the program.
The third step is the operation course of the program. It is operated for 8 weeks and the meeting is once a week. Every meeting has a two-hour education program. The program uses diverse teaching methods such as lecture, participation activity, viewing(video, internet etc), and discussion.
The procedure of the program in the meeting is Introduction(10Min), Lecture(50Min), Break(10Min), Participation Activity and Discussion(40Min), and Closing(10Min).
The final step is the evaluation of the program.
To evaluate the effect of the program, the study checked the behavioral change of child care and surveyed the satisfaction after the program with the evaluation sheet. The program was wholly evaluated through open-type questions and interviews.
To check mothers' behavioral changes of raising methods before and since the program, the "measurement of mother's raising behavior" was used. The results were compared by 't-test.' (The subjects were 26 mothers without absence for 8 weeks).
It shows the meaningful changes especially in the realm of Self-control and Democratic Talking Method among 8 sub-categories of the raising act : Treating a Child with Personality, Overcoming of Over-protection, View of Buddhist Values(self-esteem, altruism), Control of Emotion, Self Control, Democratic Talking Method, Attitude toward Gender, and Praising.
The satisfaction of the participants in the program was highest in the item "I am usually satisfied" with the whole contents of the program. The next was "I am much satisfied".
In the evaluation of the satisfaction for each program, they answered positively in general. Especially, it showed the highest satisfaction in 'Dongsa seop', that is, the method of leading people to the truth by becoming oneness with them, and Emotional Sympathy. It was followed by 'Daegi Sermon', that is, the sermon in accordance with the listeners, and Effective Talking Method. The third was the item 'Aeseop'and Parents of Self Discipline.
Most of the participants evaluated Buddhist Thought would be very helpful for the child care. And they responded that the most helpful for the child care through Buddhist Thought is "the attitude towards the child with personality". In the open questions and interviews, they evaluated the Buddhist thought would be very useful for the basic attitude towards the child care.
Additionally, the survey of mother's change of the child care after the program turned out that it plays a positive role towards the child care.
