이청준의 <이어도>에 나타난 ‘일탈’의 크로노토프 = Chronotopes of the deviation in the novella, Ieodo written by Lee Cheong-Jun

국문 초록 (Abstract)

70년대 리얼리즘 소설들이 인물의 ‘일탈’을 통해, 사회에 대한 비판을 문제로 제기한 것과 달리, 이청준은 ‘일탈’을 통해 존재에 대한 인식의 문제를 제기했다. 이청준 소설의 ‘일탈’이 ‘인식’의 문제라는 점은 ‘크로노토프(시공간)’ 이론을 통한 논의의 적합성을 설명해준다. ‘인식’은 ‘시간, 공간’과 밀접한 관련이 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 이청준 소설의 ‘일탈’이 ‘인식’의 문제라는 점에 착안하여, 본고에서는 바흐찐의 크로노토프 이론을 가지고 이청준의 「이어도」에 나타난 ‘일탈’을 분석해 보게 되었다.
「이어도」는 중층구조로서, 작중 관찰자인 선우 중위의 ‘천남석의 실종에 대한 탐색’과 천남석의 ‘이어도 탐색’이라는 두 가지 탐색의 크로노토프가 겹쳐져 있다. 그러므로, 작품속의 ‘일탈’ 역시 선우 중위와 천남석의 ‘일탈’의 비교를 통해 파악해야 한다.
두 인물의 ‘일탈’을 비교, 고찰하는 데 있어서는, 주요 크로노토프들이 지닌 양가성을 염두에 둬야 한다. ‘일탈’의 크로노토프는 ‘일상’의 크로노토프와 대비될 뿐 아니라, 상황에 따라 ‘일상’과 ‘일탈’의 양가성을 지니기 때문이다. 양가적인 크로노토프들을 통하여 우리는 천남석과 선우 중위의 ‘일탈’의 역설을 이해하게 된다. 천남석이 사실이 아닌 허구의 섬, 이어도에 이끌렸던 것을 이해하기 위해서 선우 중위는 사실을 중시하던 자신의 방법론을 버려야 했다. 이는 이어도의 부재를 발견한 순간 이어도의 신화를 지키기 위해 죽음을 선택, 그 죽음을 통해 영원성을 얻게 된 천남석의 ‘일탈’과 마찬가지로 역설적이다.
천남석에게 있어서 ‘이어도’는 ‘일탈’의 계기이자, 인식의 문제였다. 이러한 천남석의 문제는 선우 중위의 문제로 이전되었고, 소설을 다 읽고난 독자들에게도 ‘인식’의 문제로 이전된다는 것이야말로 이 작품의 독특한 방법론이다. ‘인식’과 불가분의 관계에 있는 ‘크로노토프’ 를 통해 「이어도」에 나타난 ‘일탈’을 이해해야 했던 이유가 여기에 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As the novels of seventies raise the problem of social injustice through the deviation of characters, the novels of Lee Cheong-Jun raise the cognition of the existence itself through the deviation of characters. Deviation being aspect of cognition asserts that the novels could be analyzed on ‘Bakhtin's concept of Chronotopes'. Process of cognition is closely related to the 'time and space'. In this paper, Ieodo of Lee Cheong-Jun is analyzed turough ‘Bakhtin's concept of Chronotopes’.
Ieodo has double layered structure. There are two layers of 'deviations': The deviation of lieutenant Seonwoo Hyeon, over the deviation of reporter Chun Nam-Seok. So, the deviation in Ieodo should be apprehended by comparison between two deviations.
To understand chronotopes of these deviations, ambivalence of convention and deviation should be considered. The ambivalence of chronotopes makes it possible to understand the paradox of deviation in the novelal. To understand the reason behind Chun Nam-Seok being so wrapped up in mythical Ieodo, lieutenant Seonwoo Hyeon have to shed his the logical world view.
As Chun Nam-Seok being so wrapped up in mythical Ieodo kills himself to guard the myth of Ieodo, Seonwoo Hyeon have to shed his logical world view to understand the Ieodo. This is the mirrored structure of chronotopes in the novella and in itself paradox.
The novella leaves the epilogue opened. The reason the writer leaves as the novella opened is to make the reader's own continual cognition of situation in the novella stand.
