The purpose of this study is analyzing comparatively Korean economic researchers' characteristics on using the electronic journal and printed journal and setting up the data for the library management and service.
This study conducts a survey and tests whether Korean economic researchers have specific behavior in using journals for their researches. Null hypotheses are tested by chi-squared test, T-test, and one-way ANOVA. SAS 9.0 is used for data analysis.
By testing the null hypothesis that is there is quite difference between preferred journals by economic researchers' demographic variables, there is difference in preferred journals by age, research career, and academic background. Although, over all, more economic researchers use electronic journals than printed ones, the more age, research history, and academic career the higher frequency for printed journals.
Second null hypothesis is that there is quite difference in ability of information retrieval by preferred journals. The hypothesis test shows that it is irrelevant the relation between types of preferred journals and information retrieval capability.
Third, the null hypothesis is about satisfaction in information retrieval process among preferred journals. We find that there is no quite difference between these two variables, the hypothesis is rejected. Users for both electronic and printed journals are satisfied with results and the time required for reference. However, users for electronic journals are further satisfied than those for printed ones.
Finally, the null hypothesis that there is quite difference in frequency of use for information service organization and types of service offered between two journals types is rejected.
In general, it is widely believed that there is difference in ability in information retrieval, satisfaction for information seeking process, frequency of use and contentment for information service center between two different journals. However, the result of this study can provide some interesting information. By the result that users of electronic journals do not use more frequently the information service center, such as a library, than those of printed journals, it needs to increase users that not only traditional information management and service in libraries, but also positive marketing to users of libraries.
