Variety, conflict, and comprehensiveness in three of the canterbury tales

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Chaucer의 The Canterbury Tales는 삶의 진실을 담고 있기에 상당히 매력적인 작품이다.이 작품에서 Chaucer가 바라본 인간 세상은 갈등과 대립의 연속인데, 그 이유를 그는 습관적 사고의 틀에 갇혀 자신이 주장하는 가치만을 옳다고 고집하고 타인이 주장하는 가치에 귀 기울이지 않는 인간의 모습에서 찾고 있다.그는 또한 다양한 사회, 도덕적, 그리고 문학적 가치들이 혼재하고 있음을 알지 못하거나 인정하려 하지 않는 인간의 모습도 꼬집어내고 있다.
그가 포용적인 가치관을 갖게 된 데에는 그가 살던 시대와 그의 개인적 경험이 중요한 역할을 한 것으로 여겨진다. 사회적 배경에서 바라보면 14세기 후반 영국 사회는 극도의 정치, 경제, 사회적 혼란을 겪어야 했다.Richard 2세의 폐위, 땅과 사회적 지위를 중심으로 한 경제에서 금융 경제로의 전환, Wyclif와 그의 추종자들의 종교 반란, 흑사병으로 인한 인구 감소에 잇단 1381년 농민 봉기 등 일련의 사건들은 기존의 봉건 질서와 그것이 주장하던 가치들을 뒤흔들어 놓았다. 그 한 가지 결과로서 사회적 이동이 급증하였는데, 보다 높은 계층과 낮은 계층은 가치관의 충돌을 겪데 된 것이다.
Chaucer의 전기를 살펴보면, 그가 특정 사회 계급에 속하지 않았다는 것이 그의 가치관 형성에 중요한 역할을 한 듯 하다.특정 사회 집단에 속하지 않았기 때문에, 다양한 사회 집단들의 가치를 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 다른 한 편으로는 갈등 관계에 있는 두 집단이 겪었을 일 을 직접 경험할 수 있었을 것이다. 더구나 왕실의 esquire로 나중에는 London 세관의 세관원으로 일하면서 각계 각층의 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있었는데, 작가의 예리한 통찰력으로 그는 그들의 특성 뿐 아니라 가치관까지 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있었을 것이다.
이 논문에서는 그의 포용적인 가치관을 The Canterbury Tales 가운데에서 세 가지 이야기들을 비교하여 살펴볼 것이다.The Knight’s Tale은 romance이고 The Miller’s Tale과 The Reeve’s Tale은 fabliaux이다. 이러한 비교가 이 논문의 주제를 잘 드러내리라 보는 이유는 세 가지 이야기들이 서로 대립되는 일단의 두 가치들을 담고 있기 때문이다.Knight의 이야기는 당시 사회의 지배층의 가치관들을 주장하는 듯 하고, Miller와 Reeve의 이야기는 피지배 계층의 가치관을 주장하고 있는 듯 하다.문학적 가치에 있어서도 romance와 fabliau는 상반된 가치를 지향한다.
Chaucer가 주제를 표현해내는 방식은, 그러나, 그렇게 단순하지가 않다.Knight의 이야기는 지배층의 가치관의 한계와 오류를 더 드러내려 하고, Reeve의 이야기는 Miller의 이야기에서 주장하는 가치관들을 반박하려 한다. 두 가지 상반된 가치 체계의 긍정적 측면과 부정적 측면을 드러내어서, Chaucer는 두 가치 체계 모두 완벽하지 않으나, 나름대로의 가치가 있다고 말하고 있다. 따라서 Knight의 이야기 후반부에서 한계와 오류를 드러낸 지배층의 가치 체계는 그 의미를 회복하고, Reeve의 이야기 후반부에서는 공격 당했던 피지배층의 가치가 회복된다. 그 과정에서 두 개의 상반된 가치 체제는 우열을 가릴 수 없는 다양한 가치 체제 가운데 하나로서, 동등한 지위를 얻게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Canterbury Tales is appealing because it penetrates into the truth of life. Human life is full of conflict and confrontation because man professes the values he lives by while nullifying those of others. In contrast, Chaucer shows comprehensiveness admitting diverse social, moral, and literary values. Moreover, he perforates into mans inability to see or admit the values other than his own.
An examination of his social and biographical backgrounds will help understand to what extent Chaucer has developed his comprehensive view of the world. In social background, English society had witnessed political, social, and economic unrest including the disposition of Richard II, Wyclif and his followers, the Rising of 1381 and the rise of economy based on money in the later 14th century. The series of incidents had shaken the established feudal system and the values it had imposed on the society. As a result, social mobility increased. Both the higher and the lower classes were forced to see the values the other professed.
In biographical background, Chaucers ambiguous social position seems to have played an important role in the development of his perspective of life. Because his social position was between diverse social groups, he could experience what both sides might have experienced. In addition, he had a chance to meet diverse people from varied walks of life as an esquier of the royal household and controller of the customs in London. With writers sharp insight, Chaucer could examine the diverse values they live by as well as their characteristics.
This thesis tries to show Chaucers comprehensiveness by comparing three talesone from romance, The Knights Tale and two from fabliaux, The Millers Tale and The Reeves Tale. This comparison will well present Chaucers comprehensiveness because they asseverate two opposing values. In terms of social and moral values, The Knights Tale avers the values of the high class; The Millers Tale and The Reeves Tale assert the values of the low class. In terms of literary values, romance and fabliaux profess contrary values. Chaucer was able to accommodate contrary social, moral, and literary values.
The way Chaucer presents the theme, however, makes the tales complex. The Knights tale presents the ideals of the high class as folly; the Reeves tale attacks the values the Millers tale asserts. By displaying both the positive and negative aspects of each set of values, Chaucer tries to render his comprehensive view of the world. Therefore, he restores the ideals of the high class toward the end of the Knights tale and sensuality and humour toward the end of the Reeves tale. In that process, the two contrary sets of values attain equal status. No one set of values is automatically superior to the other. Each set of values is imperfect but potentially equally worthy.
