This study conducted literature survey and actual remains investigation simultaneously on the fabrics of the Silla period. Literature survey referenced the ancient books, papers, and the various reports, deducing the basic framework of the weaving techniques and the textile culture at that time. The actual remains investigated in this study comprises ~300 pieces of fabrics excavated in the ~50 tombs of the 2~10th century.
The investigated Silla fabrics comprised hemp, silk, wool, and floss silk. The hemps were plain weaved using s-twisted thread and the density of the fabrics were 5~34 threads/㎠. The ramie used plain weave and 1/1 braid method where s-twisted thread was used in the case of plain weave and ramie were a little denser than hemps. The examined silk could be categorized into plain weave, variation plain weave, twill, leno weave, double compound weave, braid, and twining, all of them made with non-twisted threads and degummed silk. Plain woven silk ranged from 35 threads to 144 threads.
The plain-woven silk is the 'cho' made of thin thread with wide spacing between the threads.
The warp and weft are the fabrics with large differences in densities woven with spun silk yarn or by the variation of the plain weaving techniques. Among the investigated fabrics, 'Myun' spun with silk yarn was imprinted on the remains of the early 1st century, which is the first discovered remains of the ancient 'Myun' in Korean peninsula.
The twill showd geometric patterns of rhombus or slant lines.
'Sa' weaved with leno weave, the warp-faced compound weave, 1/1 braid, 2/2 braid, and the twining were found in the investigated remains.
There were 'Gye' woven with plain weave and Felt, which were never reported before among the excavated fabrics in the southern part of Korean peninsula. Also purple-like colored silk was found in the 5~6C fabrics, which were used among top-class social level of the Shilla period. The floss silk was found between the double woven brocade and plain woven silk of the belt, which is an important evidence that the floss silk was used for stuffing in the early 6th century.
The single and double wrapping cloths were found in the wrapping remains of the copper mirror, which indicate the early history of the fabric 'Bozagi'.
The simple hand-loom could be used in the plain weaving, but the fabrics with pattern might be weaved utilizing the loom with shed rod, reed, and treadles. More than two shuttle might be used at the same time. Also for the dying techniques, soaking, tie-dye, and drawing were used.
