한·남아프리카관세동맹(SACU)의 자유무역협정(FTA) 필요성과 추진 전략

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Southern African Customs Union, an African regional economic organization, is the world’s oldest customs union, founded in 1910. Its members include Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland.
The five member states maintain a common external tariff, share customs revenues, and coordinate policies and decision-making on a wide range of trade issues.
The purpose of this study is to examine the necessity and strategies of Korea-Southern African Customs Union FTA. Korea’s FTA networks covers more than 60% of the global economic geography through its continuous expansion of trade agreements. Expanding the FTA networks is inevitable for the export-oriented nation. Korean products will benefit from lower tariffs than those exported by their Japanese and Chinese rivals and gain greater market shares.
Korea first concluded FTAs with major global economic blocs including the US, EU and ASEAN, and is now working to prepare for negotiations more trade agreements with country like Southern African Customs Union.
Successful free trade agreement can help Korea and Southern African Customs Union reap economies of scale, expand markets and collectively exploit their resources, thus gradually raising their competitiveness in the global economy.
In conclusion, considering the overall prospects of Korean economic growth and export market expansion, Korean government’s efforts to conclude Korea-Southern African Customs Union FTA.
