독도,이어도 해양영토분쟁과 한국의 복합 대응 = Maritime Territorial Disputes and Korea`s Strategic Choices for Dokdo and Iedo

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study discusses current points of contention regarding Dokdo and Iedo in terms of maritime territorial disputes in East Asia and ways for Korea to deal with possible developments in those disputes in the near future. There has been very limited experience in multilateral and institutional cooperation in Northeast Asia. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is supposed to be a backbone for resolving maritime territorial disputes, has played a role but been insignificant in producing final solutions for the disputes, too. Although there is no great probability that Korea and the other countries involved would try to resolve the issues regarding Dokdo and Iedo in military terms, it is also unlikely that the issues will be resolved in other ways soon. Therefore, against future uncertainties, Korea must work hard to make both diplomatic and military ends meet. It can hardly be overemphasized that Korea will have great difficulty in employing its own military forces even in case it should with regard to those issues. Therefore, Korea should adopt a perspective of complex world politics and find ways to resolve those conflicts in that perspective without entirely relying on hard power politics.
