수호전(水滸傳)서사의 전환 하나, 황니강(黃泥岡)사건과 삼완(三阮)의 등장- 금성탄(金聖嘆)의 비평을 중심으로 = WongNaiGang Case and Appearance of Three Ruans, One of Change of the Epic ShuiHuZhuan(Outlaws of the Marsh)

“Shuihuzhuan” is very extensive epic and it is not easy to understand the outline. However, from the view at a distance, the epic is changed from personal story to a group story with the 39th and 40th episodes as the turningpoint. The personal epicin the early chapters has the structure as if several individual episodes are connected together. In such structure, the stories connecting individuals to groups and converting the individual chivalry or revenge to systematic, physical and ideological resistance to governmental authority draw attention. The structure is the preliminary step to gradually integrate the epics of each individual into the general structure of epic. It acts as the seismic center earnestly creating the tremendous earthquake in the epic of Ryozanpaku in the latter parts. Such a development of the story is deployed from the middle of the 11th episode to the middle of the 18th episode. The key event in such development is robbing the convoy of birthdaygifts in WongNaiGang and appearance of three Ruans. WongNaiGang case gradually changes the epic from the individual chivalry and revenge to physical and organizational resistance to a government. The appearance of three Ruans shows theresentment and anger of the public which becomes the basis for Ryozanpaku. Ryozanpaku and the government confronted each other from the 40th episode. Such change was not abruptly generated but implied from the WongNaiGang case. What we have to pay attention in such change of the epic is the appearance of three brothers of Ruan Xiaoqi. The characteristics of three brothers who were ignorant fishermen were completely changed from the common person enduring persecution from government officers and hiding complaints inside to the fierce resistants criticizing the system and attacking government officers as joining the Wong Nai Gang case. As Heo Gyun insisted, they were changed from the common people or blaming people to the resistant people. They are historic essence as well as the social reality of Ryozanpaku, the group of thieves. The significance of Wong Nai Gang case and appearance of three brothers of Ruan Xiaoqi in the general epic of Shui Hu Zhuan is far beyond external appearance or quantitative percentage. Deliberating such events is to appreciate the delicacy of individual event in detail as well as to understand the tremendous flow of epic at a glance.
