In the Soviet period, the Freemasonry has seldom been mentioned because of the official interpretations of the Russian Revolution. Most of the Soviet historians, including I. I. Mints, the leading historian during the Brezhnev Era, avoided the Masonic questions or made a short and passive remark concerning the Russian Freemasonry. Nowadays, few historians deny not only the existence of the political Masonry but also its roles during the 1917 Russian revolution. According to N. V. Nekrasov, who served as the secretary of the Supreme Council of “Grand Orient of the Peoples of Russia”, the Russian political freemasonry had 300-350 members by the time of the February Revolution, but among them there were many influential people. They belonged to the various political parties or groups, but had the common goal, that is, the abolition of the autocratic regime in Russia. As the February Revolution broke out, the organizations of the Russian Masonry made its members deal with the acute situations in Russia. They made some members participate both in the Provisional Government and in the Petrograd Soviet Council of Workers' Deputies. Moreover, the political Masonry of Russia exerted its influences over the appointments of the posts in the local governments. In particular, the political Masonry played an important role in the Provisional Government after the February Revolution. The Masons, led by N. V. Nekrasov, hold the moderate line of P. N. Miliukov in check, which led to the resignation of the minister of foreign affairs. The interviews and memoirs, written by the Masons, testified that the members of Supreme Council held several meetings to exert some influences on the situations of Russia from the February Revolution to the October Revolution. Though they were interested in the alliance of the Leftist groups, they became to take a position against Bolsheviks. However, as the situations were changed rapidly, the influences of the Masonry on the historical processes of Russia became diminishing. While the political Masons consisted of the elites in various circles, the masses began to involve themselves in the politics in Russia. It was natural that the political group with the slogans, appealing to the masses, had more chances to take power than the small elites of the Masonry did. In addition, the Masons who had accomplished the abolition of autocracy, held different views on the future political lines. Some Masons tried to reconstruct the Masonic organizations at home and abroad, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. Thus, I came to the conclusion that the political Masons played a significant role in the political spheres of Russia in 1917, but could not succeed in preventing the Bolshevik Party from seizing power by the October Revolution.
