그 많던 새마을운동은 어디로 갔을까? - 김영미의 『그들의 새마을운동』과 구술사 연구 = A New Research on Saemaeul Movement by Oral History Methodology: focusing on a new critical study of Saemaeul Movement by Young-Mi Kim

While extreme arguments on Saemaeul Movement have been presented lately, a new finding appeared before Korean modern historical society. Which is Their Saemaeul Movement written by Dr Young-Mi Kim.
She carried out a rural Maeul[community] study through field work and oral history methodology that few historians have used recently. When she investigated several rural villages and some farmers in Icheon-si Gyeonggi-do, She found out that it was not the Saemaeul Movement that made the ‘new villages’, to say, Saemaeul. On the contrary, she concluded that those pre-existing new villages(Saemaeul) led to the Saemaeul Movement. In other words, the movement of self-help had already been started by indigenous leaders and farmers to modernize their own villages and build prosperous rural societies, especially since the Korean War, before Park's administration started on Saemaeul Movement in 1970s. Park's administration and supporters argued it was a successful movement, but it was a failure, in that the rural societies of Korea was being gradually weakened to a total collapse due to the manufacturing industry oriented policies in the process of industrialization.
This paper examined the fruit of her long study, issues, and problems. I proposed that she continue to deepen her studies by more reflectivity on her research methodology, though I recognized her findings to be very significant.
