      The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parents' emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence. Specifically, research questions addressed in this study were as follows: 1) Is there any relationship between parents' emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence? 2) Is there any relationship between parents' emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence according to children's gender? Subjects for this study were 310 five-year-old children and their 620 parents (310 mothers and 310 fathers), all of whom were sampled from 20 classes of 23 public or private kindergartens in Chongju-si and Daejon-si. Children's social competence was measured by the questionnaires constructed by the researcher and parents' emotional expressiveness was measured by the questionnaire, a revised Korean version of Halberstadt's(1986) Family Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). Data collected from the participants were analyzed with Pearson's coefficient of correlations. Results found in this study were as follows: First, there was positive correlation between mothers' positive emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence, but negative correlation between mothers' dominant-negative emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence. Second, there was positive correlation between fathers' positive emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence, but negative correlation between fathers' dominant-negative emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence.
