1998년 벨파스트 평화협정과 북아일랜드 평화교육의 상관성 - 상호이해교육(EMU)에서 민주시민교육(CE)으로 - = Relationship of Belfast Agreement and Peace Education in Northern Ireland: - From Education for Mutual Understanding to Citizenship Education -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 북아일랜드의 평화협정의 체결이 평화교육에 미치는 영향에 대한 현장연구이다. 연구내용은 북아일랜드의 분리주의에 대한 사회문화적 배경, 평화교육의 경향 그리고 평화교육 현장에서 활동하고 있는 관련인사들과의 인터뷰 분석 등이며, 문헌분석과 집중적인 현장연구 방법을 사용하였다. 북아일랜드는 외연적으로는 종교적 차이에 의해 민족이 분리되어 상호 반목하는 분단지역으로서 평화교육은 체제안팎에서 상이한 의미를 가지고 전개된다. 1988년 평화협정 이전에는 차이를 전제한 공존형의 상호이해교육에서 평화협정 이후엔 시민적 통합을 지향하는 민주시민교육으로 성격이 변화되었다. 이러한 변화는 학교 안팎의 평화교육 현장에도 반영되어 있다. 이러한 평화과정과 평화교육간의 상관성에 대한 발견은 분단지역 평화교육 연구에 있어서 실증적 분석의 한 축을 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper is a field research report focused on analysing the relationship between Belfast Agreement and peace education in Northern Ireland. The content is composed of the sociocultural background of NI conflict, the trends of peace education, and critical interviews with core specialists of peace education fields, Belfast by means of document analysis and intensive field research. Northern Ireland is segregated into two hostile blocks, protestant Unionist and Catholic Nationalist apparently, so that ironically peace education is necessary to overcome the antagonism between two sects inside and outside school. On the way of peace process in Northern Ireland, people have struggled against such segregation and inherited violence and finally in 1998 Belfast Agreement has approved between UK and Ireland Republic, being ratified by people in Northern Ireland as a result. Belfast Agreement transformed peace education in NI from education for mutual understanding to citizenship education; coexistence model to integration one. The relationship between peace process and peace education as such is a research finding of peace education fields in divided society in general.
